Raimi's films showed both sides of Peter's life. His economic problems, his relationship troubles and of course crime fighting. None of the other movies nailed all these aspects as these movies. Spider-Man 3 is seriously underrated. Not in execution, but the unique ideas they had in it. Peter regresses and becomes an asshole because he's never had to deal with success before. He's like a starved kid in buffet; he doesn't know how to control himself. He spent so long being a loser that when he finally won at life, it got to his head. And it all goes downhill. I feel like the cheese was necessary looking back now, considering Raimi was paying tribute to the '60s Spider-Man comics and all its campiness, not to mention the soap opera of the comics. In spite of the superficial details like the web-shooters and the intellect, Raimi nailed the tone and message of the comics pretty well.

This movie felt like a big moment when it came out. It felt like the dawn of a new era for blockbusters and cinema in general. I love this movie. It feels weighty too - like an actual, solid piece of filmmaking. My problem with the new Spider-Man films, is that they're way too lightweight and throwaway.
@ETTMedia3700

Yeah, I think the new spiderman films are good, but I think the oversaturation of comic movies is a part of the reason why they don't feel... epic. I think another reason is because it's a coming of age spiderman trilogy. In theory, the next one should be the most grand yet, of the new trilogy at least.

You're 100% correct about the movie being a big deal when it came out, and how it felt like a new age of movies. I think a lot of people who either weren't alive or were very young when it came out don't really grasp just how much of a pop-culture behemoth this movie was. I vividly remember the build-up to this movie, and it was *everywhere.* It wasn't a movie... it was an event. It felt bigger than even the biggest current films. I swear, I feel like I saw more hype and coverage back in 2002 over _Spider-Man_ than I saw in 2019 with _Endgame._

This movie holds a place near to my heart. My family didnt have much growing up, so birthdays where a small toy and a meal, we didnt have the money to do more. I was 5 and saw the ad on tv for this movie called spiderman coming out near my birthday and I just thought I really want to see that. I went around the neighborhood collecting cans and doing chores to find money for the movie. On the day of my birthday I said I'd go to a friends house and went to the theater with a pocketful of change. I didn't know how money worked, so I just dropped it all on the counter and said I want to see spiderman. The guy at the booth helped me out by counting my coins, helped me with the menu and brought me to the auditorium. And there I was, with my small popcorn and my medium coke, enjoying the birthday gift I had worked so hard for. I didn't really understand the plot, I was scared shitless during Norman's transformation to the point that I had nightmares and thats how my parents found out. But I was so happy. I fell in love with cinema at that moment. I can't hear the opening theme without tearing up a bit, it brings back the feeling that I could do everything and that I would work my way to my goals. It's my most cherished cinema going experience. And to this day that is still how I celebrate my birthday. I have no party for myself, no gifts (my gf and mother always plan something now and get me a little something) but I still go to the cinema and with the spare change I got through the year I buy myself a ticket, a popcorn and a coke and feel invincible. Thank you Jeremy for reviewing this, your videos mean so much to me, they helped me think about the world in a different way in a time I needed it, they even lead into meeting my said girlfriend, but thats a story for another time. He definitely understood the charecter more than any other directors before even Tim Burton. Even Burton himself said that Nolan captured the spirit of the charecter that he never understood . Do I think that Nolan completely got it right? No that will go to the animated series but he did care for the charecter and the man underneath the mask , same as spider-man I care for Peter Parker not spider-man if you really don't care for the man underneath the mask than you don't care for what is going on that is what Raime and Nolan understood more than others .

@@TH3F4LC0Nx Thank you!! Jeremy mentions this moment, but its a gem in the movie. At the site of the burning building, the officers approach in a hurry, "Hold it right there, we're taking you in!" Upon hearing a "Woman" screaming, without hesitation, Peter turns to the man who would have arrested him and tell him "I'm going" without much more than a second thought, he's ready to put his life on the line in service of others. Similar to what good cops to, and you have to imagine the Police officer knew that as well. The Cop needed a moment to think, "I'll be here when you get back" Clearly a man following his orders, and doing what he's told to preserve the law. "I'm not coming back, Chief" Gotta Love Tobey's witty remark, while also staying true to his heroic ideals. I used to interpret this as Peter didn't know what'd happen if he went back inside that burning building, and there's a chance he might go in there and never come out. Clearly, the Cop knew in his heart, that his duty was to people and running out of time he has to make a decision but quickly tells Peter, "Go, GO!" Peter lifts himself into the air before catapulting himself into the flaming window. The small moments of genuine heroism, something inspirational, and gives you faith in people. There’s also a moment in Spider-Man 2 when we see the Spider-Man suit after Peter’s left it behind and in the corner you see the photo is credited to Eddie Brock.

You’ll often hear Burton fanboys claim that without Batman, Nolan’s trilogy wouldn’t exist (even though Nolan never once cited Burton as inspiration). But Spider-Man is the movie that turned comic book movies into cultural movements.

I'm an Indian so let me give a foreigner's perspective. The Spider-man movies were what put super-heroes on the map. Unless you belonged to a wealthy upper class family in India you did not watch Super-man and Batman films when they came out in the 20th century. Those who did watch them liked them. But they weren't the majority. Because most people did not watch English movies. However the Spider-man films came out when more people started watching English movies. They reached a larger audience. And they made the concept of super-heroes common place and made other super-heroes better known. So you're right that Sam Raimi's films made Superheroes more popular. Those who

I was a kid and until watching this movie I had never heard of Spider-Man or any other superhero. After watching it I went nuts and kept drawing Spider-Man all the time. I had never seen a comic-book. I loved the first Spider-Man movie and for a while I kept putting random spiders on my hands with hope of them biting me and giving me powers. 😂😂

The first time in my life I ever felt anything like hype was at the end of the second film, where Harry begins to break, and hears the ghost of his father in his head, smashes the mirror and discoveres all the hidden goblin tech. I still get goosebumps from how good that scene was.

Funny story: I watched it in the cinema with my pops when I was five years old, but it was subtitled (non English speaker here). I later watched it dubbed, but I still remember my anguish as the police officer tried to arrest Spidey during the building-on-fire scene. I remember being all "he's the good guy, don't do it!" No wonder Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel superhero. Great vid as always Jeremy! Now, on to Training Day, please :D

It’s not even about nostalgia if I’m being honest. The Sam Raimi movies felt like actual films. Not visionless rehashes of an already working mass appeal formula applied to a brand. This of course, being the Holland movies.

Tom The Fish There are objective parts of movies like with cinematography and a screenplay with dialogue and structure if the acting is executed well, but the movies aren’t objectively bad. It’s subjective what you think of them and Spider-Man 2 is great even with cheesy moments. There is no need to be pretentious and these movies mean something to a lot of people which isn’t bad either. No one was comparing them to Citizen Kane and the high art criticism is frankly stupid. That’s you getting upset over people liking the movies. Saying there is nothing special about them other than nostalgia is ridiculous honestly and I just rewatched Spider-Man 2. The moment of Bonnie Somerville over acting isn’t great, but it still works incredibly well. I wish certain movies got more publicity like Wind River and Good Time, but calling them popcorn tested movies is demeaning and immature where you don’t seem like someone who knows much about movies.
