As a Latina, those scenes with him interacting with his Hispanic mom hit so close to home. I was surprised to say the least, for one I didn't realize he was mixed so I was surprised as hell. 2 the swift transitions between English and Spanish when he spoke to his mom was so realistic to me speaking to my mom It made me so emotional. The way he interacted with his old friends, switching between languages was so amazing. Like I did not think I needed that representation until I saw the movie. His culture adds so much to his character but its presented in such subtle ways, its incredible.

Ever since the days of Toby and Raimi, I wanted to be Spider-Man. Later I realized, I easily could be. I obviously couldn’t climb up walls or sense oncoming danger as accurately as Peter could, but I could endure. I could take a punch from life as easily as I could take a punch from the bad guys. That’s what I’ve always liked about Spidey (whoever he or she is), is that life will constantly kick them down and they’re back on their feet before you can say Excelsior. Why? Because great power must ALWAYS come with great responsibility, no exceptions. In the first Spider-Man movie, Green Goblin proclaimed that people love seeing heroes fall. If Spidey’s taught me anything, it’s that we love seeing how fast they get back up.

But the only bigotry there was that some people thought that the first all black cast and black directed major black superhero film wouldn't draw audiences on par with what it's usual white counterparts tend to do at the box office. Into the Spider-Verse is one of the best *comic book* movies ever made. It takes the visual language of comic books and makes them come alive in a way that I've never seen. The leap of faith is a perfect example - look at the use of panels, the onomatopoeia, the "splash panel" of Miles rising up as he plunges down - you're inside a comic book watching this. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a completely different story. It's thoroughly cinematic - a John Hughes teen angst movie blended with superheroes, a classic Marvel format by now. Michael Keaton's take on the Vulture was one of the best villains in any Marvel movie. That being said, Into the Spider-Verse makes something glaringly apparent: stories about a young, inexperienced, teenage Spider-Man are fresher and more relevant with Miles inside the mask. You can't swap in Miles with Peter in Spider-Man Homecoming without losing some critical beats (specifically his relationship with Tony as a surrogate father), but there are other story beats that Miles could hit harder and with freshness that Peter doesn't create. It's going to be interesting to see what happens going forward, but I think that the net winners are going to be the audience.

The problem with Miles in the comics is that Brian Michael Bendis, the man that created and up til now the only person to write him extensively, doesn’t really share anything in common with Miles. That being the case Miles never really feels like a real modern teenager/ POC to me, just just some old dude’s interpretation of one. He created a fantastic framework for him, his dynamic with his parents and his criminal uncle as well as his anxieties in living up to the mantle, all of which look like they’ve been translated to screen perfectly, but he never quite worked as a living breathing person. I’ve only seen the released clips so far but I’m really liking what I’ve seen in terms of how they wrote Mile’s character. Can’t wait to see the whole movie

I’m okay with him being pretty damn smart, but again, him being a genius spits in the face of his appeal! What’re the chances that a random radioactive Spider bit one of the smartest people on earth? It would’ve been 10x more impactful if he just ran like a comic book shop or something on that scale. @@schlimetime4938 Its ok not to like the genius side of Peter Parker, but he was a genius since his very first appearance in comics. Its just as integral to the character as anything else, the raimi movies just blinded people to that. Lee just said himself in the video that people of all kinds seeing themselves in Spider-man wasn't even intentional. He wasn't created to be captain everyman. He just happens to have certain problems alot of people can relate to. But he is still a Stan Lee creation, which means he's a larger than life character with or without powers.

OUTSTANDING use of “You’re That Spider Guy” toward the end of your analysis. I’ve listened to that piece hundreds of times, and I’m euphoric to hear someone use it in such perfect context. I didn’t think I could be more excited for this film, being a fellow fan since early childhood, but you managed to somehow fuel that even more. That alone just earned you my subscription.

Can’t wait to see this, I’ve been a Spidey fan for as long as I can remember; it was the first pg13 film I ever saw when it debuted in 2002.

Seeing as how I spent almost ten years being Spider-Man at kids' birthday parties (I'm Asian BTW) made the message in this film resonate greatly with me :)

I saw the movie yesterday and to be honest before then I was never really a Miles fan. But after getting out of the theater I went to the concessions line, grabbed the first miles funko pop I could find and bought it right then and there, this movie made me love Miles' character so much! The writing was amazing, the animation was spectacular, and, as you said in your video, it taught it's viewers the ultimate lesson, that ANYONE can be Spiderman. Easily the best animated movie of the year, and 2nd in my top 3 (first being Infinity War..duh) movies of 2018 Thanks for giving an awesome and well thought out review!!

I have been a Spidey fan for sooooooo long that when the Miles Morales comics came out I didn't even pick them up, cuz to me only Peter could be Spider-man. How stupid that was. Years later when this film came out, prior to going to see it, I decided to read the whole Miles Ultimate Spider-man run, and I couldn't believe it but now I consider Miles just as much the real Webhead as Peter is. Amazing how quickly he won me over.
