This almost made me cry seeing Squeak trying to nurse the little stuffie. I wonder if there could be something wrong with Spike’s milk? And maybe that’s why Squeak was nursing from Chestnut? (Bless your little heart Chestnut, for giving Squeak some milk) Or maybe Spike was just too young to be a mother? Honestly I was shocked that she had a baby. I didn’t think she was old enough.
@Forest_Friend

I think we were more worried than we needed to be. We first saw Squeak on August 8th, so even if she was born that night she's at least 3 weeks old. From what I'm seeing online, by two weeks north american porcupines mostly eat vegetation and only nurse occasionally. We'll be keeping an eye on them and we do have a wildlife rescue close by, but I think Squeak was just born later than the other three babies (not surprising, Spike only turned 1 this spring, so it kinda makes sense that she was the last to get pregnant. We weren't expecting her to have a baby this young either.) She's very active (probably a good sign) and I think she's just driving Spike a little insane by constantly climbing on her. She also likes to taste the other porcupines' faces and the next youngest baby (Pip) has tried tasting Squeak's face too.

@@Forest_Friend okay that makes me feel much better, knowing that at two weeks most babies have moved on to vegetation. Squeak is just soooooo tiny that I worry about her. She’s so little! I worry about Spike as well, being so young herself and having a baby. It’s odd that Squeak was born so much later than the other three babies, who all look to be about the same age and roughly the same size. Next to them, Squeak is like a sentient dust bunny.

@@suzannahjohnson6879 We do still have some concerns about her just being born late in the year, but we're happy to supplement her feeding and if it seemed like she wasn't big enough getting closer to winter, we'd check in with Hope For Wildlife on whether it would make sense for her to winter with them. (This is also part of why we keep putting the stuffie next to her, I'm trying to gauge her growth.) I'm still floored that they're so independent at 2 weeks. But also, it's not like we see what her and Spike are up to 24/7. For all I know, Spike fed her just before arriving and Squeak was interrupting Spike's turn to eat.

Sorry, there was a note at the beginning but it's easy to miss. It was the mom all along. Spike and Pokey look a lot alike (kind of have a sort of crew cut hair style). I remember thinking at the time that the baby may have been confused because of how similar they look, but nope. She knew exactly where to find her mom. In our defense, we've got 12 porcupines running around, and with each new addition, it gets a little bit harder to tell them apart. The other thing that threw us off is Spike (the mom) usually won't eat off the ground. She prefers a table (upside down plant pot) but she was hungry enough this time that she didn't care. Normally, she would have gone to 'her table' and moaned until we put the peanuts there.

In 2023, Chonkers and Chestnut arrived as adults, so no idea how old they actually are. Fluffy and Spike were the 2023 babies. This year, we had Pokie and George arrive (probably babies from 2023) and four that were born in the spring/summer of 2024: Walnut, Hazelnut, Pip, and Squeak. My cat's mom headbutted her way into my house when I was younger. She had two kittens and was pregnant with my future cat and his sister. When she had the next batch of kittens, the older ones were still trying to nurse from her and she'd whack them away with her paw (which she needed to do because they were getting too old to nurse and they were taking the younger kittens' milk. She also used to get fed up with mothering and one time we heard high-pitched squealing in the living room and rushed downstairs to find she'd left the youngest kittens by themselves in the middle of the room to go take a nap by herself in the basement. The kittens' eyes weren't open yet and they were hobbling around blind, looking for their mom. I thought it was heartwarming though, because it meant she thought her kittens were in safe hands with us! Sometimes mothers just need a bloody break.

Just chanced upon your video, & can't tell if those are raw or roasted peanuts the porcupines are munching on. I feed wild squirrels in the winter, & just found out recently that raw peanuts can be poisonous for rodents. Sweet potatoes too, I just discovered today. Thought I'd leave the info here for you, from an extremely reputable seed company, & scientific studies are also available online. My apologies if this is a review of info you already know. Sweet little creatures who come visit you, we're so lucky when wild animals chose to trust us. Cheers! "Feeding raw peanuts to squirrels and other animals can have serious consequences. The results can even be fatal if peanuts compose a large and constant part of the diet. Peanuts are a legume, not a true nut, and when raw they contain a trypsin inhibitor, a substance that inhibits or prevents the pancreas from producing trypsin which is an enzyme essential for the absorption of protein by the intestine. While the exact relationship between the trypsin inhibitor and malnutrition in rodents is not fully understood, the detrimental effects have been documented since 1917. Thus squirrels fed a steady diet of raw peanuts could easily develop severe malnutrition, and works such as The Backyard Naturalist by Craig Tufts specify the use of roasted peanuts. According to the Washington State Cooperative Extension Service, roasting hulled raw peanuts for twenty to thirty minutes at 300 degrees Fahrenheit, stirring them frequently, will destroy the trypsin inhibitor and render the peanuts suitable for use as feed. Similar cautions also apply to the use of sweet potatoes and to other raw legumes such as soybeans which are sometimes recommended as food for squirrels and which contain trypsin inhibitors." Cooking sweet potatoes destroys the trypsin inhibitor & makes them completely safe for our wild animal friends to eat.

It turned out that it was the mom in the video. She looks a LOT like one of the others, named Pokey (there's 12 in total, and with each new one, it gets a little bit harder to tell them apart). Spike and Pokey have a similar crew cut hair style. We should've figured it out, but Spike also usually whines if we don't feed her at her 'table' (an upside down plant pot). We have a few that absolutely love Gala apples (and are weirdly picky about apple type). What kind do yours like? We tried acorns last year (no oak trees near us, so that was a trip to the park) and one absolutely loved them, for all of one day. Also, what kind of berries?

Squeak is fine, and you're correct that's her mom, Spike. We've got a dozen porcupines who visit regularly and Pokey and Spike look a lot alike. They both sort of have a crew cut hairstyle. Spike usually whines if we don't feed her at her table (an upside down plant pot) but I guess she was hungry enough here that she didn't care. We put an editor's note at the beginning, but I think maybe we should have just disabled the audio, because we did think at the time that something was wrong. They've both visited since, both of them are fine and we were surprised to learn that at 2 weeks, north american porcupines only rarely nurse. This video was from 3 weeks after we first saw Squeak, so she also isn't nearly as dependent on her mom as we thought.
