I have now been using a spindle moulder now for over thirty years with all my fingers still attached. Your video shows safety as the top agenda and I admire anyone teaching old school methods with safety being paramount ,When you show shaping circular round objects I cramp wide rebated board so it hits template on outfeed side,I line up centre of circle with centre of spindle and fix board,This makes it easier and more accurate to find centre cut as you can run template on face board and stop enabling precise central location,I was trained by a ex engineer and worked on high end joinery projects and had similar training to you

I am a wood cutting machinist by trade/profession; & believe me, this gentleman knows what he is talking about. The spindle moulder has been badly maligned over the years; but used correctly & sensibly, it is a VERY versatile machine. As with ALL woodworking machinery, safety is paramount. My thanks to you Sir for your very instructive & informative video; your tutorial reminded me of my technical college days back in the mid 1960's.

I've been using a spindle in my home workshop for a few years, in what I consider a safe manner ( don't think I've broken any of your rules). BUT big BUT didn't realize until I watched you at work how little I actually know! Learnt so much in 45 minutes, will certainly watch through again. Your video is the best I've watched on this subject and although directed at the complete beginner I think there is plenty of content there for users at any level. Never to late to learn. Thanks for a brilliant production Roy.

An excellent video, Thank you. I've long considered a shaper to be one of the most useful tools in a woodworking shop. There are a few more things that could be covered but this is a really good basic set. Using a feed to do curved or circular work, the use of an out side fence, the use of a shaper to do compound curves on a stair rail, use of a tilt spindle shaper to do curved crown moldings. Next video in this series??

Excellent video. One thing to mind though is that blocks are no longer allowed to be cutters only, they must be fitted with a limiting cutter as well to reduce maximum projection of cut to 1.1mm. That might not apply to home workshops, but it's definitely a coshh regulation in the workplace.

RAISED PANEL - he uses a false table with a thin metal strip The strip is likely 1/4 inch or 5 mm in height so it does not hit by the cutter) so there is always something to stop the panel from reaching into the space between the fence and the cutter. Thus a smooth cut all along the edge. Take note from 23:22 to at least 23:55. Great video

Good to see that your passing Roy's knowledge on to keen enthusiasts who want to learn and work safely. Tony (sub'd)

Thanks Tony, yes I find it ironic that home woodworkers still shy from the Spindle Moulder. As I am sure you know, but will state for the record, the scariest legend was of knives firing out from the cutter block at tremendous force and speed, like shrapnel, and causing great damage to doors, walls or even serious injury to operators - I am told that this did sometimes happen with old toolings. Modern Euro style cutter blocks and knives found on all new machinery have safety pins which make this impossible. There are of course still other dangers with the moulder if not operated correctly but they are now no different to the dangers faced with using a router table - something woodworkers embrace a little too casually imho.

Ive experienced cutters flying of an old whitehill block - many moons ago - I was backing off for an old boy who had gingerly tightened the cutters . We were moulding these huge oak newel posts which involved dropping on , about 30 mins in on a drop on one of the cutters came out - smashes in to the back of the fence - took a chunk out of the spindle ring and then shattered hit all the extraction chute - then the wall - amazingly didn’t hit either of us - but did ruin the work

For some reason the "experts", who run the cash registers at woodworking supply stores, are always quick to mention that "shapers are dangerous"; with the implication that router tables are safe. They also mention that radial arm saws are dangerous implying that table saws are safe. When set up and used properly radial arm saws and shapers are no more dangerous than table saws and router tables. My experience has been that router tables work very well with small diameter cutters and do not work well with large cutters. Matching the correct machine to a particular job helps ensure that a machine is not taken beyond its intended limits. Any machine operated in an unsafe manner can be dangerous. Most people who cut off their fingers and hands cut them off with table saws. Usually this is due to the fact that they lose their fear of the machine and try to save time by skipping steps. david
@leehaelters6182
4 жыл бұрын
Shapers earned that reputation especially with the earlier cutterheads. Before loose knife heads used lock edge steel and dimensions were so rigorously controlled, they were vulnerable to less than perfect setup. When a tablesaw or jointer had a mishap, at least the plane of exposure usually included only the operator. When a knife came out of a shaper head, though, everyone in the shop was in the line of fire, waist level.

WELL, at last I have seen someone use a board fully across the machines fence to eliminate all gaps around the cutter. I always use MDF. This is in my opinion an extremely safe way to work on these machines and the give the highest quality of work completely eliminating any Skype or Dipping into the cutter due to a miss aligned fence or miss movement on the operator or feeder. with this board this cannot happen. The shapers I used in France were the biggest I've ever used even in the shops in Los Angeles Cal. Extremely powerful and could make any cut one time and go all day long. I love working on them. Ear protection is a must as is safety glasses and no jewelry of any kind on the hands or wrist. Good video and you have cute toys that do a mans job. as they say the only difference between a man and a boy is the price of his toys.
