The opening is catchy as hell but this is sadly one of those cartoons that I barely watched in the 80's as a kid because their stories are unnerving as hell. They're not horror story scary but there's a grim and depressing element that's not seen in most of their contemporaries at that time.

I feel the same way when I bring up Count Duckula lol. Even my best friend thought I was imagining it for a bit till I found proof. One thing I love about the cartoons from the 80's was the theme songs...they had banging intros that stuck in you head more times than not. I'll still hum the Spiral Zone intro from time to time even though I haven't seen it in awhile, I had the first VHS waaay back in the day and watched the crap out of it..I think the only thing I loved more at the time was TMNT and Thundercats..but I loved a lot of those 80's toons like Transformers, G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K, TMNT, Thundercats, Silverhawks (Tally Hawk! *cyborg hawk screech*), Visionaries and the like. Hasbro actually owns the rights to M.A.S.K and Visionaries iirc so they could bring it back whenever they want...i wouldn't mind a shot at getting the toys again brand new for less than trying to get them used off Ebay. I actually had the life size Tally Hawk toy from Silverhawks...I loved that thing. Then there was Jayce and the Wheel Warriors..it was wonky but the intro was crazy and was almost a mini power ballad.

I really liked the toys from this line. I only had a few, but I was one of those kids who loved articulation above all else in toys. The only problem I had was the hands breaking off. I don't really remember seeing the show, but I was aware of it. Some of the toys had a mail away deal where you would get a certificate, dog tags with your name on them, an audio cassette tape, and a few other things. I still have some of it around somewhere, but I remember the tape was basically just a short story about the conflict, and it didn't interest me much. I just mainly liked the figures. Still, its nice to know that it has its place in toy history, and it would be nice if they would at least release new versions of the toys at some point.

This came out at the point when there was way too many cartoons on TV and it simply got lost in the mix. I vaguely remember it. They only sold the toys at Kay bee in my hometown. I'm not sure why no one else sold them. That's probably one reason why I never got them as a kid. I only got toys from Walmart or K-mart. My town didn't have a TRU and I hardly got a chance to ever go inside Kay bee unless it was a special trip to the mall.

This show got me up my freshman year at college for the cafeteria's 7:30 am opening and my 8am chem class. When people do the whole "how have I never heard of this!" line, the early morning air time (Transformers, GI Joe and Voltron owned the afternoon time slots) is probably why. Even when it was still on, none one else that I knew watched it. Similar too another cartoon of the time, Mighty Orbots, that never got any ratings due to its first-show-Saturday-morning-after-the-farm-report time slot. It's the one story that I really wish had got a second season (well, that and a REAL third season to gargoyles). It's the one story that seemed profound in a consistent way. It never got cheezy, the way centurions (another show that was scripted for an older audience) could. In other words, it was a great show that deserved to exist, no matter how well the toys sold, just because it was a good story. Then I saw General Grevious' Zone Rider and wished . . . live action Spiral Zone . . .

A true favorite of mine, character development is not lost in this series. The Zone effect on humans reminds me of chronic eczema; disturbing.
