If you have a Leatherface and you found a good body turn motor, let me know where you got it from!!!
PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING A LEATHERFACE IN THE FUTURE:
This prop in very poor/broken condition can be seen going for $700, 800, 900, and it is NOT worth it whatsoever. Do NOT pay much for one of these if either arm is broken, and I would not even bother with one of these that has broken shoulders. If you see one that is extremely yellowed, I would pass on it too. You need very specific plastic pegs for the left arm mount, that can only be found on another Gemmy Lifesize. These pegs are currently not being 3d-printed and would probably not hold up on this particular prop if you could buy a 3d-printed copy.
DO NOT DISPLAY/STORE THIS PROP WITH THE CHAINSAW ATTATCHED FOR EXTENDED PERIODS
The arm will snap, and the shoulder frame will crack.
It is almost a guarantee that you will have board issues if you are looking for a cheaper one, so be prepared. As shown in the video, the head turn and body turn motors are bad, and the circuit board is not well equipped to handle dying or stubborn motors.
Here's what was wrong with mine:
Split gear in eyes
Eyes pushed into head
Deformed head
Fried head and body turn
Split gear in head turn
Chain on Chainsaw missing
Split gear in chainsaw mech
Broken Left Arm
Detached Right Arm
Besides that, here are my personal thoughts:
I still cannot believe one of these is in my possession now. I legitimately gave up years ago on this Lifesize because I NEVER thought I would ever own one, and knowing how these can be, I wasn't going to shell out a bunch of money for a broken one. This to many takes a consistent top 10 spot in the list of the greatest non-professional Lifesize Halloween props of all time, of any company, of any time period. Take one look at the face, the gruesome detail, and the chilling audio, and you'll see why.
A lot of people talk about how good the 2000s were for Spirit and Halloween props, and they always point to Leatherface as the epitome of what Spirit should be selling. Gory, scary, chilling, and realistic. While Leatherface really is an extreme example of what Spirit did right, and there were a lot of props from that era that were pretty bad, the attention to cosmetic detail from that period is what really set it apart from today. The Spencer's Halloween fountains, the many latex props that used to be a much more common part of Halloween decorating, and much much more are relics of the past that will never be replicated or matched until the industry takes a drastic turn away from its current direction. That's not to say what we have now is bad at all, but the charm and uniqueness of the 2000s is long gone.
In terms of Gemmy's entire prop lineup, Leatherface has been said to have been one of the most expensive lifesizes for the company to produce. The five animations (which for 2006 is crazy) and the attention to detail is incredible. Add on that this is officially licensed and the sheer number of custom parts this has compared to other gemmy lifesizes, and that large cost of production makes a lot of sense. I will say, besides the head and the chainsaw, this Lifesize isn't really far off from Jason Voorhees, or many of the other Gemmy licensed characters in terms of clothing quality, internal frames, and electronics.
As mentioned multiple times, this thing is FAULTY. The weight of the chainsaw completely derails this prop's functionality. The body turn and head turn transistors are puny for what they do, and both respective motors are awful. The original chainsaw blade dry-rots super easily, the arm mechanism has a terrible motor and is poorly designed, and the chainsaw up-and-down movement is questionable to say the least. 2006 was Gemmy's first year producing fully-animated figures with body movement though, and pretty much all of the inherent problems that props like Leatherface had were corrected by 2008.
Looking back to the 2000s era with current standards and technology in mind, mechanical jank was really the norm. Nothing was really that reliable unless it had like one animation. Things really didn't start getting super reliable until the past 5 or 6 years. The technology available back then was much worse than we have now, and they did as much as they can in an industry that was like a fifth of the size it is now. Still, Gemmy was light years ahead of everybody else, and to think they achieved a Lifesize like this that borders on professional-grade in 2006 is unreal.
