I don’t get how netcode isn’t a top priority. Many fighting games have skyrocketed in relevance just by adding rollback netcode. Nintendo could sell anything with “now it works” as the slogan.

The reason I've heard from a friend is that because Japan has such a more dense population, it's so much less of an issue for them, and we just get their games for them to make some extra side cash pretty much, there's less reason for them to actually support the West's communication issues.

@@jubbydubby8275 The dense population argument doesn't cut it, imo. I've played Smash matches with friends of mine that live in the same city as me over a stable internet connection and still gotten tons of unstable matches and disconnects. It's definitely not that.

I don’t know if Nintendo are technically incompetent and their senior management who make these decisions have now idea how to implement good online services, or just don’t care enough but their online has always been pretty poor quality. It’s like the games they make are the priority and any online things are only a last minute thought. That’s fine when games didn’t need or use a lot of online, but for games like Splatoon or others where online provides almost all of the longevity of a game it’s not good enough any more.

This is a really good review and one I've been hoping for. I want to add a few small things For flick stick Splatoon does sort of have a work around, Y as a camera reset defaults to the direction you are facing, while this is no where near as good usually it does actually work well with Squid Roll. If you do a backward squid roll combining Y flicks the camera to face that direction. I still don't personally care much if they add it but some form of functionality is there. I do also want to give Squid Roll more credit. The ability is super fluid but the skill in being able to parry attacks and a burst movement option tied to it is huge. But most importantly squid rolling of walls allows moving through stages to be way easier, and in general makes using the walls way less of a bad option. In Splatoon 1-2 approaching via wall was kind of terrible because it was predictable and slow, but being able to roll and shoot while falling and use squid surge adds much needed mixup options that make climbing them feel like a more balanced option. I think with time and players being used to them it will be even more clear how nice a change it is. I do hope the netcode can improve but that and the map design to me are the big disapointments as a hardcore fan. That being said I still agree its easily the best game in the series, and a lot of QOL improvements are nice. Hopefully we can see more improvements through the continued updates.

After 100% completing Alterna with every single weapon I’ve just been doing countless Salmon Run matches and grinding cash for some sick gear. I’ve actually been digging Tableturf quite a bit, once you understand the rules it becomes a nice little distraction to whittle away at while petting your cat or something. My only major grievances are the frequent connection issues, and the baffling way in which Scales are distributed. Right now there’s not much incentive to actually slay Cohozuna when your performance feels so disconnected from your loot. Regardless, I’ve been having an absolute blast with this game. I think another huge improvement the game did is that they actually gave you a reason to use your coins now. You can find the same piece of gear you already own from a shop to upgrade it to have more sub abilities and now they have a mini gacha game with coins at the lobby. they also got tickets for the weapons and if you really want a specific weapon like me that wanted the 52 gal from the gecko I can just pay 3 tickets to get them quicker. makes it more welcoming for older players that just want to play with their main weapon from the very start without having to deal with the long level up process. Also the fact that you can in theory get any gear with any ability you want, although the grind is big for it, the fact that it’s an option it’s just really nice to have. I’m not sure if I’m alone in this opinion, but for me the single player campaign really felt like just more octo expansion with a new (and I will say the best) hub world, and due to the huge similarities between the two, including the ending, while not mechanically but in the core concept of the reason for the fight, it all felt like a rehash with having the scenery of the levels be floating objects, to navigating a building, and a grand finale with some major consequences, but more on that last part in the spoilers below. Also, the change in scenery from desert to snow was kinda a bummer, since I liked the desert part of the game very much as far as the hub went. Gonna go into spoilers & more detail below, so be warned! I think having the worlds not each have a boss is a bit strange, or at least to me, and the bosses felt lackluster compared to the designs and mechanics in 1 and 2. I enjoyed the building of tension before a boss started, and the uniqueness to each design too. This time it’s just the announcers, and that’s a huge miss, since you know what to expect by the time you get to the first boss, and I think each boss is sorta mechanically lacking as you kinda just shoot them until they’re down, where the other bosses in the series had a mixture of shooting but also threw in some obstacles such as climbing. Luckily, Grizz has a pretty fun fight, though I do wish there was more to it, an extra layer or something perhaps? The final boss of the first game is still my favorite for the variety DJO introduces with having to chase him and overall using all the mechanics of the game in some way, and while Grizz does kinda have this you more or less just collect continently placed salmon eggs and chase him as he kinda slowly attacks you one attack at a time, opposed to S1’s Octavio’s more layered attacks. As far as the final phase goes, I wish we were more involved somehow, rather than just sucking up the goop and fighting the same enemies we’ve been fighting the entire game. Have smallfry (or I guess bigfry in this case) be controlled by the player, maybe have Octavio throw bigfry like how it works in game as a replacement for the bomb. (Also, I expected DJ Octavio to make a reappearance as a 2nd to final boss when he was taken away by the goop, but no, he just reappears for the finale. Rather unfortunate since I think he has the best bosstrack in the game.) Also, is it just me or is the enemy variety this time around lacking? I noticed they didn’t use every enemy from the previous entry, and even then not a lot of new additions to the enemy cast were made, which is disappointing since I really liked the new enemies, I just wish more were introduced. If I think of anything more I’ll add it to this conversation or this message, and apologies for how rambly this is.

Going from the splatoon 3 beta back to playing splatoon 2 was like playing smash wii U after trying Ultimate. The changes aren't too obvious starting out unless you're very experienced with the game, but returning to the old one feels so slow and poorly designed by comparison.

I also wish you could do more in the lobby while waiting, I'm sure there's some technical reason why but I should be able to interact with things like the terminal, lockers, and friends online while waiting.

With the steelhead under the Slammin Lid at 2:47, if you swim under and squid roll out of the lid's shield, it'll slam onto the steelhead, killing it

Yeah, the stringers seem a bit weird at first. If you're not charging them, they're short-range spread guns. If you are charging them, you can take people out in about two hits. I've grown to like the Reef-Lux, mostly because Tenta Missiles and because it covers ground quickly, which is a fair payoff for non-exploding arrows.

One of the biggest upgrades from 3 to 2 that I think would've been cool to mention in that section was the near entirely overhauled special selection. The specials in Splatoon 2 ranged from broken unintentionally to broken intentionally, and while some of the larger offenders are still in the mix (looking at you, map wide homing missiles that reveal your location and force you to move to not get one shot) I don't think there are any strictly bad specials in 3.

This is insane. I was literally JUST watching the exact episode of ATHF you pulled the first few Carl quotes from like 20 minutes before this was uploaded. I had to pause the video and make sure I didn't still have HBO Max playing I was so confused.

For the bosses on top of each other problem, in that specific instance you could've killed the steelhead by triggering the falling of the slammin' lid. It's a common strategy at higher level play. Some people even keep them alive a while so they can do it repeatedly.

quick note; the gyro reset button also doubles as a sort of flick stick control now, because it will turn your entire aim into the direction you're holding to move. so if you're looking one way and hold the opposite direction to move and hit y, you'll flip the camera 180 degrees. it's a bit harder to use than most flick stick controls but i think with regular stick controls this might open up an even higher skill ceiling for those willing to practice it

Is there no option to make the gyro aim in splatoon 3 let you aim vertically with the gyroscope AND analog stick? It feels really bad to me as a result because no other shooter does this even botw

It's so much faster, smoother and more accurate to gyro up. It's also easier to make your center all catywompus if you at vertical stick movement.

As a Splatoon 1/2 player I'm surprised to see Nintendo actually commit to making the news skippable and removing the Salmon Run schedule. Felt like something they would never change it despite the complaints. Maybe map rotation has a chance to get adjusted as well. Just will have to wait til Splatoon 4 for it lmao

Very good review, I never played splatoon 2 but I pretty much agree with everything you said. I thought the recon was the most annoying thing to find since its fairly important to be able to scout and practice with the maps, why is it just in the street? Wish you talked a bit about the music but I guess that aspect has been good throughout the series. I felt compared to Splatoon 1 it was much better, and Splat 1's music was already very good. The online is unfortunate and a serious blemish on the game, my friend was barely able to play and nearly returned it, he felt conflicted because he really wanted to play the game but it wasn't letting him play. A real shame and I hope the servers improve

something to note about trying to join old rooms, for some reason the lobby menu has one tab for your friends’ status history (the 19 minutes ago thing), and one for who is currently in an open lobby (one tab over) this confused me at first
