Yeah you're starting to catch on, it's a musical culture war. The squids are very proudly punk/ska, so the multiplayer has a lot of tracks like that, then in singleplayer the octopi bring a lot of DJ/EDM elements and then they try to impose their music tastes on each other. And every game (or the dlc) resolves the story conflict with the assistance of music. Notably in Splatoon 2 one of the idols is an octo and the culture adapts and displays more EDM elements in that game. And then there's salmons whose musical genre is... chaos cello?

I love what they did with F34RM3 Remix because it not only sounds "less important" in a _meta sense,_ it's very easy to imagine Octavio _diegetically writing it that way IN-UNIVERSE;_ in Splatoon 1, he's at the top of his game, he's got tech beyond your wildest dreams powered by an untold source of power he stole from a paradisical megatropolis, but in Splatoon 3 he's more down on his luck, using a scrapped-together machine that looks worse for wear, with no special power source, desperately trying to still be as threatening Awesome to see more Splatoon stuff, I freakin' LOVE this song haha :D --I hope someone's requested some -_-salmon-_- somewhere down the line 👀--

Even the name of the remix sells it. "Fear me" isn't some imposing command. It's basically Octavio saying "please, someone fear me". Compared to his outing in Splatoon 1, which is still living in my head as one of the coolest final bosses ever, where it genuinely feels like everything builds up to it...Splat 3 Octavio is down on his luck. Hard. Which it makes it perfect for the intro 'fake out' boss.

I never really thought of it that way! But yes, it makes perfect sense! This even makes sense in the perspective of the player, or even the NSS themselves. Splatoon 1 Octavio is probably the first time anyone in the agency actually got to him, and so he's not only terrifying because it's literally the *big guy himself* but also because this is the first time they've really seen what he can do. However, by Splatoon 3, we've fought him twice before. Not only for the player, but also for the in-universe characters. By the time Fear Me comes around, it's just more of the same, he's lost his whole thing.

You made a very good guess! DJ Octavio is the final boss for Splatoon 1, but is the FIRST boss for Splatoon 3. Which is why S3’s version doesn’t have as many phases as S1’s version, it’s a much shorter boss battle.

Indeed, Splatoon is very much "all ages" not just "for kids", quite similarly to perhaps other "medium-dark" Nintendo series like Pikmin and Zelda where there's a lot of reasons kids would love it but somewhat even more things that adults can enjoy about the games

Splatoon does a great job of integrating its music with its world and characters. In the first game, "I Am Octavio" is the final boss theme, with the mix changing as you progress through the fight. (Also Octavio literally is DJing the music on turntables inside the huge mech he pilots.) Until you get to the final stretch of the fight, where the heroes literally hijack the theme music (to play "Calamari Inkantation", which I think you've also heard). And yeah, in Splatoon 3 he's the first boss, and is much easier to defeat. I think the part with the kind of out-of-place sitar in the background reflects how the fight takes place in a desert-like wasteland area. (I never noticed that part until now tbh)
@argentbast

This is the first time hearing it side by side and it's really interesting. In the first version he is the final boss of the first game. He is confident and full of swagger: he has achieved all of his objectives and is poised to make an attack on the surface. He received the big energy source of the surface and is powering a mega mech of death rays and flying robo fists. You are striking him when he's at the top and the bells that are tolling are foretelling your defeat. In the second version he is the first boss of the third game. I noticed you pointed out that it's "not as in your face" and "reserved," and you are absolutely right. In this version, a significant group of his underlings were stolen from him and he is accusing you as the culprit. His mech is a cobbled together back-up and is running on his spite and indignation. He's trying to maintain his composure as the leader of a once-powerful military force (and, yes, he's also a DJ), but he's proud and arrogant and isn't about to let on the fact that he's desperately trying to keep everything together, which I feel comes through in the music.
@argentbast

Also, related. Music does indeed play a pretty big role in the lore. It seems that in the fall of humanity, one of the thing that persisted is the emotional connected attached to music. What's surprising is that the composers are more or less allowed to blend things that don't ordinarily go together, which makes for some very unique music that is specific to Splatoon.
@Stephen-Fox

There's a recontextualization from the game's victory jingle for the single player campaigns within that tune. (He's the final boss of Splatoon 1 and the first boss in Splatoon 3, defeating him changes the context of the Splatoon 3 campaign to the point of shifting the victory jingle to something completely different. And, yes, he is an in universe DJ) I'd say the theming is on youth counter culture rather than music itself, and bands - and music generally - is part of that. (As is the late 80s/early 90s skater culture the game takes heavy influence from in its aesthetics - Your in-game pics and posts are presented as in-game graffiti for other players, as are the things the other players are saying and drawing for you. The matches generally are taking place in places you're not meant to be. This kind of contextualizes the paint thing as competitive graffiti, aesthetically if not in lore) I forget if you've been shown any of the Salmon Run music yet yet because... Oh boy the Salmon Run music is different - not just from the rest of Splatoon's soundscape, but from pretty much anything I recall hearing in a mainstream video game. (to continue the youth counter culture theming, salmon run is a hoard mode framed as a shitty part time job you might take in your teens, complete with the original announcement for Salmon Run as a mode in Splatoon 2 being framed as a VHS training video) Splatoon 3 released almost exactly one year ago - It's next update at the start of September is around the one year anniversary of it's release, and around halfway through the preannounced support in the form of content updates for the game. The original released in 2015. The second in 2017.

I was heavily reminded of paint ball that my brother got into in the early 2000's. They even had specific guns that shot balls of water-based paint (around the size of a golf ball, I think). He had to buy a face mask so he wouldn't take direct hits to the face again. Thankfully, he only had to experience it the one day to concede in getting protection for his face, plus it would stop mom from asking more questions than necessary.

Splatoon 3 sold 3.5 million copies in its first weekend in Japan alone, becoming the fastest selling game of all time there. (It was surpassed by Pokemon Scarlet & Violet a few months later.) To put it in perspective, game launches in Japan are usually in the hundreds of thousands rather than millions. Splatoon 2, for example, sold about 650k in the same period. Its lifetime sales in Japan are a bit over 4 million, which Splatoon 3 has already surpassed. It really became a big cultural thing in the last six years.

Someone should request Salmon Run music. And some more obscure Story Mode music. And maybe some music from the lobby. But for Jessie: Splatoon 3 is still receiving new content every 3 months and has an active playerbase. It’s a 3rd person shooter 5 different 4v4 PvP modes, a 4p coop horde mode and 1 free story campaign each game + 1 story dlc for Splatoon 2 and 1 unreleased dlc for S3. The game is more casual than other shooters but still has a high skill ceiling and dedicated competitive community.

'Splatoon has way more depth' is pretty much a great summary. Surface level, it's a pvp shooter where the goal is get more of your ink color than the opposing team. In true Nintendo fashion, gameplay is solid. Feels very good to control and you can either be casual or go very hard core into mechanics with weapon ranges, ability boosts etc etc. What's made it stick the landing as strongly as it has though is the culture and lore. They went above and beyond figuring out how trends would evolve over time. Each game has a popular idol group, all the songs are done by different 'bands' that will break up or collab over time, there are different clothing brands that go in and out of style, it encourages players to submit art which then becomes graffiti in the hub world. Also they have monthly events called 'splatfests' that are essentially really big music festivals where you can watch the idols perform and compete against each other in different teams. Teams can be anything from 'dogs versus cats' to major story changing things like 'chaos versus order'. Story changing isn't an exaggeration. One contest pit the squid sisters against each other and that resulted in the losing team's idol being kidnapped in the next game. It's very much a feedback loop between devs and players to make it feel like a living, breathing world. It'sssss also a post apocalyptic game where most of the mammals died off, more than one character has probably been cloned, and an underground subway was essentially turning the denizens into mindless zombies in order to be cleansed.

Octavio is the final boss of the first & 2nd games & there’s a different song used as his boss theme in 2. They subvert expectations in S3 by making Octavio the FIRST boss in that game and that’s what plays here. There’s dozens & dozens of bands in the Splatoon world that all have their own unique feel to them. Splatoon 3 just celebrated its 1 year anniversary and is still getting more new music and updates. Hopefully you’ll listen to more in the future!

You're also right on the money, while Octavio was the final boss of Splat 1 and Co-final boss of Splat 2, he was only the first boss of Splat 3. Though he does show up in that final phase later along with Calamari Inkantation 3Mix.
