Fane would likely be irritated that everyone thinks this would be his "perfect ending". It's an ending that "isn't incompatible" with his backstory, at best. Allow me to explain: Anyone who has read The Republic would probably understand the argument that you want to design a society such that you would be content no matter where you were born into it. Consigning an entire group of races to abject slavery just because you want to do right by someone you knew from the past isn't just barbaric, it's a fundamental misunderstanding of basic morality. It doesn't matter what kind of justification you build, whether it's prefaced on original sin or otherwise. For some reason, people are assuming that the God King was a just king, and "no Tyrant", simply because we DO NOT KNOW much about the Eternals, and they were an "advanced race". However it's hard to say someone "isn't a tyrant" when they are literally enslaving every race other than their own. If that doesn't count as a tyrant to you, I'm really curious to know where that line is for you. From a deontological stance, the idea of imprisoning and enslaving individuals who did nothing warranting such treatment is immoral by any serviceable definition of the word. And from a consequentialist framework, you enslave many races just to restore power to one race -- conveniently, one of which you are a member. Some of his dialogue options openly mock Amadia for calling herself a "God" just because she has gained more power and doesn't die. He simply sees her as an Eternal who gained extra power from the Veil. She would take his "scientific discovery" and use it as a false claim to godhood, and, perhaps especially, righteousness. So for me, the best option was to to erase divinity by dispersing the power of source to all. This seems like a lackluster ending at first, but when you compare it to all others, wherein some sort of mass enslavement happens, I'll take a brief but ultimately unstable period of peace every day of the week. Fane ultimately would have wanted this, given that his original motivation was to share the arcane secrets of the universe with the world. Even when this future's peace collapses because of the greed of peoples, there's no indication that EVEN IN that state that it's worse than the alternatives from the other endings. This is unironically what I think Fane would have actually done. Many of you say he would want to right his "Original Sin", but I'd remind you that Fane was a scholar, not some covenant-fullfiling zealot. Sure, he feels guilty about Dallis and the Eternals, but at the end of the day, two wrongs don't make a right. You can't simply "fix" everything by enslaving everyone else. The decision to support the "God King" does not reverse time and set all as it once was.

There is no best ending to this game. Every ending, some race suffers. If you bring back the eternals, the mortals suffer. If you seal the veil, the eternals suffer. If you disperse source among the mortals, everyone suffers but especially the eternals. If you pick the doctor ending as Lohse, everyone suffers. If you return the eternals only and leave the god king in the void, not only do the mortal races suffer but also the god king, and he'll be suffering for eternity. If you become a god, everyone suffers. Even if this results in the most stable mortal society. There is literally no 'happy' ending where no one gets screwed over

@@runtergerutscht4401 Yeah well, I agree with that. My complaint was that people were saying this is his 'perfect ending'; and besides that people saying the dude that was going to enslave all living races including humans was "not a tyrant" which was just laughable. It's really just a bad consequentialist thought experiment; as realistically this kind of decision would have a massive impact on the 'aggregate amount' of suffering. It's not even that there's no "best" ending, there's no DIFFERENT ending when you reallly think about it. Really it's just all other races besides whichever you choose suffering at the expense of the one you did choose. The one exception is where you basically do nothing but kick the can down the road and have the races unite against the void, but even that's not really a long-term solution as the ending is WRITTEN to end the same regardless of what you do. That said I'm not really complaining... this game's dialogue is good enough that I don't care if the storyboard writing is a bit lazy.
@runtergerutscht4401

@@josephdavis3472 I don't think it's the perfect ending, but in my opinion the eternals' return is the redemption ending for Fane. And I don't really think it's all as bad as you think it to be. I think that the mortal races won't be slaves for eternity. Eventually, they'll just go extinct. Genocide complete. Their source will be consumed by the eternals, finally fully restoring their race, with the rest going to the veil. So in the end, it's just the eternals in all their previous glory (from before they fell) and the sworn. No mortals will exist to suffer anymore and the eternals will be able to live happily, exploring the universe through science and source. Also I don't think the god king is that bad of a dude, given that his people's fate is at stake. Yes he's extreme, but let's face it- he had to kill all the mortals either way to bring back his people because he needed the source. He's a better dude than the gods. Not perfect but Fane had no complaints about him before the veil was discovered. But that's just my thoughts on that.

3 жыл бұрын
Well there is quite a bit of truth in this ending, Fane IS after all an eternal, his compassion is also to them, those who originally inhabited Rivellon, those who were unjustly banished to the void by the 7. Also, he is the original sinner, everything that happened is a result of his mistake of betraying his king's orders and trusting the 7 with the truth about the veil. It's literally his fault that all of this happened and so, it's also his moral obligation not just because they're his race but also because he is the one whose failure caused their doom.
@Andrea_404
3 жыл бұрын
@@runtergerutscht4401 There might be truth to it if your character doesn't care about him, but even then it's questionable, he's much too intelligent and self conscious to give in to yet another tyrant after suffering from others and seeing a new blooming world for himself. If he's shepherded into focusing on the bigger picture, he'll see that leaving the past behind untouched is not any bigger injustice than causing other peoples to suffer in the place of the old ones, who also doesn't have anything to do with the problem. Also, define 'sin'. Trying to act upon good will is definitely not that, and if we call everyone a sinner whose calculations gone entirely wrong there wouldn't be a person left out. There was never an ounce of malevolence in him, heck, not even greed, since he stated that he never done anything for the sake of gaining power, only knowledge and the betterment of their society. If anyone caused any doom, folks can thank the seven for it and their ironically human-like greed.
@runtergerutscht4401

@@Andrea_404 ok so first, Fane never says that the god-king is a tyrant, he is by all means a fair and wise ruler who managed to be an adequate leader to a civilization of highly sophisticated beings, his methods in the story are extreme but that is because it's literally the world that's at stake. He's in no way a tyrant, he's ruled with the support of his people. He's also most certainly not cruel, he actually chose to imprison Fane for a crime that should have been punished with death, unintentionally also saving him from the cruel fate that befell his kin. And to the sin part: the word "sin" is obviously very much influenced by the biblical interpretation of sin and wouldn't you know it? In the bible, there is even an original sin. Adam and Eve ate from the apple without any ill intention, yet they defied their lord's will and were therefore cast out of heaven, made mortal and sent to earth. It's a direct parallel to Fane, he too had no ill intention yet by not following his kings' orders, (which by the way were quite wise because he rightfully recognized that the veil was something far too important to fiddle with, the catastrophe that happened with the 7 proves this), Fane doomed his people and his kin and was imprisoned.
@runtergerutscht4401
3 жыл бұрын
@@Andrea_404 also it's more important than the other actions taken by people later on because he actually had the power to stop all of it, had he not told the 7 none of history would have happened. @Andrea_404

@@runtergerutscht4401 It's not Fane that calls the GodKing a tyrant, it's me, and he would be for a lot of people that live after the eternals. You cannot be just for both sides and Fane recognises that, having gotten fond of the new world and recognising that it's not any worse than the old, only different. Yes the GodKing purged and sealed him away, which is interesting because Fane himself tells you he had been executed for his actions. Even if it did not mean death, from the game we get to know that purging is not any better than death, so much for being not cruel. I know the biblical meaning of sin, it was rather a rhetorical question and pointing out that it pretty much as exact a definition as "morals" and "ethics", meaning not at all. Of course they could blame Fane but in reality, at that point no one, not even the God King himself knew for sure what that veil hides, so there might have even been something positive coming out of that discovery, which would probably be the case had the information not been used by the seven, but, for example the King himself. So it's quite difficult to tell who made the initial wrong decision no? Where's the start? There's always a step before. Of course it can be viewed like Fane did the misstep, but rather this issue is more complex, as usual, and instead on depending one person it actually depended on a lot of them. The "original sin" was a bunch of people doing a bunch of unforeseeable missteps. (Maybe except for the seven, they knew very well what they were doing.) i'm only saying that this ending does not do justice to Fane because his personality speaks against it. He'll even become totally depressed if he chooses to bring back the eternals, he just gets catatonic and throws all his notes into the sea.

@@kittykat-ut3bs it didnt sound like a tyrannical rule from any of the commentaries by fane or other eternals. In fact the god king denying fane from studying the veil further proves that he cared about the stability and safety of his people more than power. The seven lords were the arseholes that started everything and Fane was responsible for the disaster by enabling the seven lords in his reckless quest for knowledge. Punishing people harshly is a matter of perspective. Fane, for something that would normally warrant execution was only sentenced to imprisonment. The god king probably got more and more unstable throughout his millennia of exile in the void, that kind of thing would probably drive someone insane. But I consider it fair when the god king harshly punishes people who fail him in his best chance to restore himself and his people from exile, as there is far too much at stake to be lenient. If anything, that just proves how good the god king is at his job. He knows when to punish people when it needs to be done, being overly soft is a bad trait for a king.

To make it more personal, something that once belonged to your family was stolen because they fled during WWII, a generation or two passes and then you find the said thing in a possesion of your friend. What makes you so sure that a messiah will even come? Jews have their own version of a coming messiah, Christians their own, and Muslims as well. All three Abrahamic religions and their versions on the coming messiah and the events that will surround him contradict each other. Which one is correct? And about which sin are you talking about? If you believe in the "original sin", then you have absolutely nothing to worry about, unless you are a Jews. I went with this ending simply because the eternal torment of the eternals in the void is a far worse pain than the slavery that the younger races will now face, and is thus mathematically the least fucked up ending. Besides, realistically cultures change dramatically as millenia unfold, so there will likely come a point where the eternals will change their ways and learn to coexist with the younger races.
