I’ve heard weighted steel floats more as opposed to copper. How does weighted steel handle when you make turns? Have you noticed an increase in catch ratio using the weighted steel? Thank you for a great video.

I’m a huge fan of weighted steel and I’ve caught hundreds of fish on it this year. As for sink rate I’ve confirmed weighted steel at 22 feet per hundred using the SmartTroll device. Copper is maybe a foot or so more which in my opinion is negligible. Weighted steel doesn’t birdsnest and is bulletproof in my opinion.

@@KingsLandingSportFishing as much fishing experience as I have I still have problems with a birds nest as the boats rocks. I will have to try it. Do you think the sway action of the weighted steel could trigger a bite? Like getting a strike on the turn? Thank you for the reply.

@@jimdrechsel3611 - I do believe the snaking action of weighted steel helps with bites.. especially when running spoons.

@@KingsLandingSportFishing Is that spooling device home made? If so, it would be interesting to know how you made it. Looks like you clamped the reel down opposite the reel. Clamped the two on a pole of some kind? Thanks again for taking time to answer. Learned so much to try next season.

How do you calculate the amount of backing to bring the steel up to a full spool? Thanks

I reverse spool it.. then I put on enough until it’s full. That’s what I show in the video.

Marc, if you were going to use a planer with the weighted steel what line would you attach a release too? Would you use rubber bands? A release? Can you wind the weighted steel around a release like a Sams Pro Release?
@KingsLandingSportFishing

Most of my weighted steel setups use a braid backer. I’d wrap that around the Sam’s pro release.

@@KingsLandingSportFishing That's what I thought. Wanted to hear it from you. You've had little problems with breakoffs using 20lb leader? The 20lb is for spoons I take it.

@@jimdrechsel3611 - mid season I swapped out most of my leaders to 30lb… Seems to be working well.

Hey Marc. I actually do love the weighted steel. I a couple Convector 45's. I was thinking about just loading with 30# big game mono instead of the steel and use some Torpedo weights. Is there a big advantage of using the steel ? Are u using the transom planer to prevent bad tangles down the shoot ? A little off topic this year I'm moving up from a 19' aluminum to a 25' Fiberglass Baha Crusier. I'm pretty sure u had a smaller boat and moved up to a bigger one. Did u notice any difference in down speeds or leader lengths going to a bigger boat. Thanks

What is the breakdown on installing 300' and 400' weighted steel on Tekota reels? Will 400' go on a 700?
@KingsLandingSportFishing

300 is max I out on a 700. Even then it cuts down on the backing vs installing on an 800.

I’ve used all the ones I linked and find them essentially the same…. Can’t tell the difference.
