While for most years looking at Mantle vs Mays is a fair comparison, Mantle is in the high number series so is tougher. Probably about half the number of Mays cards in existence. The better comparison is 1951 Bowman rookies - which still shows Mantle is priced crazy vs. Mays. Mantle has always had a HUGE gap to everyone else. In most sets a PSA 8 Mantle outsells a PSA 8 of the Hall of Fame rookies from the set. His prices have always made me hate buying Mantle cards. When I go for a HOF set buying the Mantle makes me shudder as I would rather have the stack of cards I could buy instead.

Agree the 1951 Bowman Mantle PSA 4 is running at about 2X compared to the 1951 Bowman Mays PSA 4. Also put a great player in NYC and they are going to have a bigger collector base.

Brees is not even the 3 or 4th best QB of all time. Clearly Manning is more accomplished with titles and MVPs, and quite frankly so is Mahomes before hitting 30. Brees has amazing career stats but only 1 title and even more of a knock is that he only got to the Super Bowl once in 20 seasons (while playing in a different conference than Brady). The 6-7x difference in prices for comparable cards should widen over time. Mantle vs Mays not even worth debating. The 52 Mantle is the Mona Lisa of this hobby, the most desirable card by collectors across generations. 1986 Fleer Jordan versus other players from the same era is interesting. The gap might be a little high but it feels like the Jordan should be somewhat lower given the pop count. However, the one thing that I will say is that none of those players from the 1980s would crack any top 5 all-time list.

Something that adds to value is culture. My mom , grandma and 99% of people know Brady. Less than 1% of people know Brees. That’s the major difference and reason for the massive price difference. Brees was nice but is already forgotten and was only known by serious football fans. I’d say Brees is overpriced , these 2tier players really drop off as time goes on. Look at Steve Young who I personally love as an example

Speaking specifically to your Prizm point, I think you're right, Dustin. I also believe the 2012 Prizm set will become a set that people reflect on and seek out decades from now. I also think you're right about current silver Prizm. I recently purchased a silver 2020 Prizm rookie, graded PSA 10, for like 15 bucks shipped. That same card, same PSA grade but in a base Prizm goes for much more, so wild. I definitely want to start looking for 2012 and 2013 Prizm parallels of my favorite players.

Brees only has 1 Super Bowl win. That's the difference. Jordan has zero comps in the 80s. You can't compare Barkley to him.

good comparision for value... similar to PE ratios of companies... when if out of whack... one can be overpriced, underpriced, fairly priced.... other comparisions is RC to 2nd year and if ratio is large relative to other players RC to 2nd year and pops are relatively stable, good opps or at least signal to look more to better understand the ratio.

The mantle and mays prices seem very crazy compared to how good of a player Mays was. Jordan however is the GOAT of GOATS. I expect his cards to continue to grow much farther and farther apart from all other bball players besides Kobe and Lebron.

Hi Dad great show 👍. If we r talking purely investing in cards I would stick to Jordan's and mantles. Jordan vs Barkley or olajuwan. I spelled his name wrong oh well. I would buy 2nd or 3rd yr Jordan's over Barkley rcs. Awesome show keep it up!

So much is regulated by the hype machine and what we are told to collect/buy/value/chase. We are all guilty of it - so really our actions mostly herd dictated and influenced. Hence the disparity will continue for that top tier vs second tier player. Justified? Unanswerable lol. How's that for a lame answer 😉

Can't compare Brees to Brady.... more like Manning to Brady. Even though Brady is considered the most controversial, suspect and questionable GOAT of all the goats, Manning is at least certified. 5 MVP's and numerous records... while Brees is more the Aaron Rodgers level. Brees card prices should be compared to Aaron Rodgers card prices. Manning is definitely underpriced but Brady MAY BE overpriced ( although I'm skeptical about that given how down the market is at this moment)
@andrewg5672

all of it is overpriced but that the nature of the market (in a good and bad way). EXAMPLE: One time i asked a room of non collector seniors what they thought a gretzky rookie went for they said a range of 1 dollar to 50 dollars. most knew the name and one said "for a piece of cardboard?". Point is all this is completely useless and the grading card market compounds it by 10x more for 9-10s and decent vintage grade. I grew up with the pokemon generation and nearly all non-collectors are shocked and surprised by the card values with most saying "WHY and HOW?". 90% of the world has no idea why cards are astronomical in price and as a collector I am fine being in the middle and knowing my boundaries on what is reasonable to pay. If you ask a person who jordan is a good 1/3rd of the entire world will probably have heard of him especially from his shoes, the jumpman logo or spacejam. If you ask anyone in the world who barkley is 0.001% might know who he is. And with that the market will follow through name and appeal.

Brady is overpriced compared to others. Same thing with Jordan in basketball. Compared to other star players from their era, they're both like 10x which is just bonkers. I can understand them being more valuable than their counterparts but those kinds of multipliers just don't make sense in the long term.

I watched Brady ever year for 2 decades. He could win with a good defense, a bad defense, good running backs, bad running backs, good wide receivers, bad wide receivers. He could even win a super bowl going to a new team without even having a training camp with said team. I think it might have had a lot to do with Brady....
