OK @sportscardinvestor you led with the topic I posted last week, so for this week I'll suggest the following: the eBay fee increase. Is it even possible to profit off a card selling on ebay with the 13% seller fees, the new tax laws and the buyer bias? What options outside of eBay exist for "investors" - I know they sponsor you guys but at what point is eBay just a non starter for selling cards??? I have a love hate relationship with this channel as I believe the investing side of the hobby is what kills the hobby, but if you can cover the topics fairly that real everyday collectors trying to add a few bucks or cards to their collection, you'll go a long way in building a legitimate resource center for the hobby... And sometimes that might mean exposing a sponsor like eBay for what they are... Highway robbery.
@davidthecardcollector

13% seller fee plus the sales tax you paid and min. 12% to uncle Sam so when you buy a card to hold you are already down 30%+. Sounds like a win for ebay all day long.

If you really believe CSG is that tough on grading why not just give them the respect? We buy graded cards to make sure we are getting what we are paying for last time I checked. So what if you think the label is ugly, you hold bgs and csg cards lower if they don't have subgrades but you are ok with psa and sgc not having them. Sounds like csg cards are under valued.

Geoff: "Are print runs OUT OF CONTROL?" No, not if people buy the cards. They're a consumer product after all, NOT an investment. The same thing happened during the so called "junk wax" era. Manufacturers made cards and people bought them. The manufacturer got their money. That's NOT overprinting. Now, when said customers thought that stashing thousands of dollars worth of factory sealed sets, unopened wax and 50 count lots of rookie cards in their closet for a quarter century was going to fund their retirement or their kid's college fund, (never minding that millions of other people were doing the same thing) well, that's just human stupidity at play. I can't imagine how many phone calls card shop owners have gotten in the last two years from people trying to cash in their 80's and 90's collections who still haven't gotten the memo.
@PIP-zf9yb

The base card value will dwindle to nothing if they keep printing more and more but even then it won't be considered a junk wax era because unlike back then there is more then just base cards to go after. 2022 Topps series 1 is hottest release for Topps in past 10 years probably despite having the highest point runs . People are chasing the serially numbered cards so there is no chance of a junk wax era it isn't even possible in today's market. Sure the base cards will be drastically reduced but that isn't what 95 percent of people are going for. Who gives a shit how many base cards they print

PSA gem rates on the new stuff is over 50% a lot of the time. When you compare old junk wax and new junk wax, print runs is about the only thing that's the same. Grading is what saved the hobby last time. What showed the difference between a good card and a bad card. Now, when everything is a 10, nothing's a 10.

Reading the comments, it has become evident, at least to me, that card collectors/hobbyists are officially in two distinct groups: one group primarily interested in purchasing cards solely for fun, hobby, and collecting as a means to its own end. Second group looking for an increase in value. The card production by Panini and Topps is tailored to satisfy the 1st group. This factor does not bode well for the second group. As a result, the second group, in my opinion, must focus more on cards that are already pricy, like vintage and GOAT cards. If people who are in the second group are hoping to hit the jackpot by buying pack after pack of newly-produced product in hopes that they can pull a gem with a low upfront investment must also realize that the more packs they purchase, the more Panini and Topps will produce and distribute product to meet the demand (which will impact scarcity down the line and negatively impact long term growth in terms of value). This is definitely the second coming of the junk wax era but disgusted behind “shiny” variations. Great for the 1st group mentioned above. Not so great for the second group.

I think there are "Covid" buyer/investors, possibly "Crypto" investors which "drew in" younger collectors excited about prices and believe they're going to retire on their collectibles? That has already happened and those individuals are long gone from our hobby. I'm amazed at what people are willing to pay for brand new product. Could it sustain? Have no idea. Guess? No. On production? Way too much product out there. Panini has over "chronicled" itself with way too many different productions of cards. If this continues? It's been back since 2020. Back during the 1988 to 1993 boom companies printed millions over a hand full of lines. Topps until 91 basically had only two lines topps and bowman.. Today Topps and Panini have upwards of 40 to 50 lines each now. Even if you figure just base low end brands print 500 to 700k each and higher end brands if its only 50k or 100k it adds up. So say 80 brands at a conservative average of 250k that's 20 million base cards!! Once again that's very conservative. With more and more hobby brands now going retail as well that number could very easily double!! Definitely something to think about. Good luck collectors. .

CSG turnaround times in my experience have been pretty good. Ive submitted over 1000 cards and i love how they look. its not horrible. It even looks better with sub grades . . . they are cheaper, reputable, and the cards are more affordable on ebay right now so now is the chance to get solid cards for a good price. I think the black plastic on SGC is "horrible" looks cheaper than the clear slabs. i have all types of slabs and really care more about the card, but to each their own. Good stuff SCI. Mahalo! (FYI, i tested out HGA with a 60 day submission of 4 cards in August 2020, just got them back after 164 calendar days and 3 of the 4 cards i submitted were mis-labeled, now that's horrible! its been 2 weeks and i have not gotten any feedback or response from HGA. I collect exclusively baseball and the “1st Edition” gimmick Topps has been pulling for the past couple years is a shameless money grab born out a deliberate attempt to create hype around a “limited” print run for an all paper product which is essentially the same product as the “2nd edition” with exception of a “1st edition” stamp. The first time Topps did a “first” edition was for 2020 Bowman flagship. For whatever reason, I was under the impression this release was a one-time thing to compensate for the delay of 2020 flagship bowman. Thankfully, It seems like the prices on 1st editions are beginning to fall. The fact Topps can justify ripping off their customers by trying to sell us, their customers, into paying MORE for a deliberately watered down product with NO GUARANTEED AUTO(S) per box/case is absurd. Btw: *AUTOGRAPHS ARE THE ONLY cards in ANY product that have a TRUE value!* This is due to the amount of autographs in a product being FINITE and cannot be replaced by a new fancy non-auto parallel #’d to X which only have perceived “fiat” value since Topps creates the value out of thin air based on whatever they want to number the card to. Sorry for the rambling, I just hope someone at SCI sees this long comment I blistered my thumbs for while typing! Best, Justin

It's not just print runs there are so many products. How many different Panini products are there and how many different configurations are there for each product. It's crazy

Numbered or short printed stuff is the way to go, it’s obvious they are overprinting a lot of the modern stuff. Once PSA’s backlog clears we’re gonna see so many of Luka’s, Zions & Trae’s along with other athletes.

Everything is cyclical. The junk wax era spurred when companies said, " Wait, we can make a lot of money with cards." Cards were never meant to be valuable - Kids used to put them in their bike spokes. As demand goes up and the production of cards gets overinflated, the card companies overproduce. This is a bubble that will pop.

As someone who grew up opening 86 topps and donruss, and being excited for a mcguire or canseco, the hobby is getting out of control. The price of a box is sky high. Base card prints seem like huge runs. Panini doing NFT that has no value and wanting $100 a pack, redemptions..what is there to say?? I loved this hobby as a kid. Maybe I am being nostalgic. I would love to get back into it, but it just feels like a new take on gambling. I watch for entertainment purposes, but it feels hard to put skin into the game, when it feels like the game is coming to an end soon.

Redemption are terrible. The only thing worse is when I buy a box of panini that has a guaranteed auto and instead I get panini points. That makes me want to scream

I bought 10 fat packs of 2022 Topps S1 Baseball and started to put the set into binder sleeves. I realized I had 3 of same card many times over but many empty spots in between I think it’s junk wax like the fed dollars, too many produced so no scarcity and no value imo

I knew this problem will eventually be an issue. I always told people to stop wasting money on blaster and hobby boxes, & just buy graded cards, until the market balances out again.

@@topreview3791 it’s fun when the prices are more affordable. You literally can buy a graded card of an athlete you’re looking for, for the same price for a hobby box.

CSG fix the label, ha and then they have something going. Actually, what I like the least are SGC slabs. There grading is Ok to good but I just don't like those Tuxedo Holders and they seem the most fragile to me.

89 Upper Deck Griffey still has a "low" PSA 10 pop %. If it was 20%+ I'd be concerned but Griffey established as one of the greatest CFs. Franco hasn't accomplished anything. Peeps wait until Chrome releases to buy Wander flagship.

I think when fanatics takes over they should have paper products for retail only, with a few bigger hits in them so people will buy. But have a more exclusive boxes with more numbered cards and less base waste. Less sets too

I am not sure what the arbitrage question was. However, I speculate that it may have been about purchasing a csg graded card at a lower price ( since it has a lower market value) on ebay etc, breaking the case and regrading with PSA. If csg has very tough grading, the card should grade well with PSA - hence the arbitrage situation. Again, this is just my guess of what the question may have been getting at. I have wondered this myself with some canadian grading companies such as MNT

Sorry Geoff, but you are so wrong on your CSG take. I agree with Doug, the actual slab is the best out there. Now, can't disagree with you on the label. It is just too big. The green doesn't even bother me. Redemption cards need to go away. Just tells you that they are trying to get too many autos there. I would like to hear your guys take on the best inserts out there today
