San Bernardino National Forest- San Bernardino Mountains- San Bernardino County, Southern California. Joshua Tree is a large perennial monocot in the Asparagus Family (Asparagaceae). It is found scattered throughout the mid-higher elevations of the Mojave Desert from eastern Central/Southern California to Nevada, S. Utah, and N.W. Arizona mostly between 2,000' to 7,000' elevation. Its gnarly branching pattern may have reminded Mormon settlers of a "praying Joshua", hence the common name. Like other yuccas (Yucca spp.)and Chaparral Yucca, (Hesperoyucca spp.), their flowers rely on a Yucca Moth species (Tegeticula sp.) for pollination/reproduction, and the moth relies on the yucca flower for protection and developing fruit for larval food! The eastern half of the Joshua Tree populations have been proposed as a new species: Eastern Joshua Tree (Yucca jaegeriana).
