I raised spotted salamanders from egg to land. I kept 1 and took the rest back were I found them when they were eggs. I also raised frogs from egg to land. And did the same thing as with the salamander's. I love all amphibians, reptiles and insects.

Nice video! I just found a spotted salamander today, and I'd like to keep it as a pet, but I want to make sure I'm being as safe for it as possible. I'm avoiding water with chlorine in it and am not handling it much at all, but when it comes to feeding it I'm thinking I'll try wax worms. I worry about mealworms because I was told that they can be bad for salamanders if they eat them live, but I have no idea, as I've seen a lot saying they can eat them. I crumbled a bunch of leaves as temporary substrate, and dampened the substrate with rainwater from outside, just until I'm able to get some proper substrate in the next few days. I'll likely try using a separate tank for feeding as you did, just so I can be certain it's eating, as I don't want the salamander to lose its food if worms burrow into the ground or hide from it. Edit: I didn't clarify but I used sand and dirt mixed together for the bottom of the enclosure and put broken leaves on a portion of it.

Cool! About the mealworms, they are a good food source for salamanders. They can be an issue if you exclusively feed mealworms to them, but they should be eating a variety. I find a lot of these guys in the wild and often times they are sharing a log with beetle larvae (mealworms). They definitely eat them in the wild, but it is in conjunction with other sources. With the wax worms, they are a good choice for a feeder but I would feed them pretty sparingly because they are VERY high in fat compared to most insects. I found that a diet consisting of roughly 50% crickets, 25% mealworms, and 25% earthworms works the best for me. Occasionally something like fish (if they are large enough) is good too. All easily accessible and healthy for your salamanders. Keep me updated!

@@PMFCreek how handlable are they? And def do more videos like this :)
@PMFCreek
Жыл бұрын
They are handleable for a salamander, they tend to just sit there and not move a lot. Being an amphibian I wouldn't handle them unless you need to because any type of checmical, soap, oil, etc on your skin can get into their body through their skin and kill them. Always make sure your hands are very clean before touching them

We found a salamander larva about six weeks ago when we were hunting for tadpoles. We didn’t know what it was it first, but we’re quite excited once we learned what it was. Today is the first day he got onto “dry land“ now we need to make sure we make a proper home for him. We were thinking it was a spotted salamander, however it doesn’t have any spots yet. How soon will the spots appear. Right now he is more dark brown than black.

Thats awesome! I would think it would be some type of mole salamander (salamanders with lungs) like a blue spotted salamander or yellow spotted salamander. Keep me updated! That sounds cool

@@PMFCreek I will get picks ASAP BTW, we are in Memphis Tennessee, if that helps with identification of the species. We were leaning towards yellow spotted.

Worms also are a good food source. But variety is important and insects are what they eat normally.

Sorry for the late reply. Some salamanders will take dead insects, you can by canned mealworms, shrimp, and crickets. But not all salamanders will take dead prey. They won't eat it if it isn't moving, so you'll have to hold it with tongs in front of their face and trick them into thinking they are alive. The best thing to do though is to supply them with a good variety of prey. I feed mine worms, shrimp, small amounts of fish, crickets, mealworms, and small dubia roaches. Hope this helps you out!

We were able to grow the salamander larva into a salamander, however once I put her into the terrarium and she was out of the water she was constantly burrowed into the substrate. I was worried I had killed her, so now I just want to let her back out in nature. I was going to do that yesterday, however she seems so lethargic, I’m afraid she won’t have enough energy in the wild. She has meal worm and crickets in there, they also seem to be some other types of bugs in there. The terrarium is outside. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Salamanders naturally want to be burrowed down under the ground or under some sort of cover like leaves, rocks, logs, and bark. I wouldn't worry about her hiding, as they love hiding to feel secure. She could also be hiding to get to a more humid area. Is her terrarium damp? I would make sure it's always in the shade and doesn't get direct sunlight as salamanders are very prone to drying out. If you want to release her just make sure you release her where you found her and make sure you put her near or under some cover

@@PMFCreek Thank you for the input, I definitely think she would be best in her natural home. I’m glad I asked, I was just going to put her in an area near the water, however I will make sure she has a place with which to borough. Even help her get started so as not to become easy target. Her terrarium is moist, I have been using collected rainwater however I’ve run out of that so I have have some tapwater it that been boiled and sitting out for over a week so there’s no more chlorine left. So, I may just use pond water since I will be releasing her soon. Thanks again.

You need a water area in your enclosure not just a water bowl. Salamanders like to burrow in damp muddy places especially spotted salamanders
@PMFCreek

The substrate under the water dish is very moist and is where one of mine usually hangs out. If you keep your enclosure humid enough they dont need an actual water section, a bowl works just fine!
