Giant hogweed is a non-native, invasive plant that is found throughout much of the UK and it's a member of the carrot family. The sap of giant hogweed contains photosensitising chemicals that can cause severe burns if it comes into contact with human skin and is exposed to sunlight. These burns can be very painful and can take months or even years to heal.
Giant hogweed is most commonly found near watercourses and in damp meadows. It can also be found on waste ground and in neglected urban areas. The plant spreads by seed and can produce up to 50,000 seeds per plant. These seeds can survive for up to 15 years in the soil.
If you see giant hogweed, it is important to avoid contact with the plant. If you do come into contact with the sap, wash the affected area immediately with soap and water. If you experience any burning or blistering, seek medical attention.
