Hi There! Here's a brief spraying and back-rolling Tutorial/Instructional video I was able to put together and share with anyone interested in the process for interior walls.
As you all should know, in the building trades and many occupations.... people have different ways of doing tasks... what I show in this video, is just how we happened to accomplish the task, that particular day. Many painters accomplish it differently, including us sometimes. I do have my favorite rolling technique and my preferences on spray technique. Other people are free to paint as they choose, so please keep comments civil and respectful.
Today's interior job is applying low sheen paint (Edgecomb Grey) to the walls on this new construction home. The texture is "orange peel" texture and has been primed already with tinted primer.
I prefer to use a 621 spray tip since it will put paint on faster, so the sprayer's job is easier and the back-roller won't have to wait as the paint is being applied.
Starting out is where some people stumble... you should pre-wet
the 18 inch roller to the core before you start spraying, and make sure that enough paint is being applied from the very start. After a few walls or a room, the sprayer and backroller will have adjusted to make the process work well.
I don't talk about roller brands, or equipment brands, simply because it isn't relevant to learning this process. Sure it's important to use a quality roller cover (ask your local paint store if in doubt), and the size nap is important. 3/4" for orange peel and thicker texures, 1/2", 9/16", or 3/8" nap for small texuture, and smoothwall surfaces.
It's also important to use a pump that will put out enough paint to use a 619, or 621 tip, roughly .6 - .7 gallons per minute or more.
Some tips. work as a team, of course. The spray guy should have experience in this field, or learn really fast about spray techniques and how much paint to apply.
When in doubt, hire a professional painter. Paint sprayers SHOULD NOT be used by anyone that doesn't FULLY understand the operation instructions and procedures, and the RISK OF INJURY to themselves and others.
PAINT SPRAYERS OPERATE AT UPWARDS OF 3000 psi for this type of work and can cause paint injection into the skin, leading to severe damage and emergency surgery TO CLEAN OUT PAINT FROM THE BLOODSTREAM AND BODY.
I make videos to teach people who want to learn, but also, I do it to represent Residential House Painters and show what we do in our profession. To show clients, and others, how much work goes into completing full home paint jobs. (and I don't show ALL the work of course).
