Hey Martin. I love how you are giving away all the information for free, but basically you're really showing how much time, effort and value you put in to your work. Then, the only people who would do this are professionals who getting paid for it or an amateur obsessed with doing it themself. This only shows why someone would pay to get the job done if they wanted it done right.

Feels like I am asking alot of questions here... One major question that pops frequently is about waiting times 1. How long you have to wait to put on the stickers ? 2. How long you wait to remove the stickets after spraying over them ? 3. On the first "big shot" why are you doing that when the manufacturer recommends lights coats span across 5 minutes each or after 3 hours... I really like your videos. I'd love to hear more about what's happening between the layers and waiting times between coats.

Because since its aerosol, as you're laying down the paint it's a constant sheet of material. If you let off and spray again solvent comes out that propels the paint. It leaves a thin area and the paint isnt bonded in one whole complete coat. You see when you pain auto body parts from bare you wrap the paint around the corners and it locks the paint on. This is why when you pay for cheap paint jobs on cars they only last a few years.

Next best option is what I did in my garage to rattlecan a car. Go to home depot, buy sheets of plastic, hang it on all sides and ceiling. Throw water down on the ground to keep dust from getting kicked up. If you want ventilation, take two box fans and two central air AC filters, cut two square holes, tape the fans to the plastic, tape filters to the fans. Boom at home paint booth for like 45 bucks.

@TheScottishSprayer

Yeah, Never do this people!!! Especially with rattle cans that contain a higher amount of thinner/dilutant just to get them to come out of the can. I've been Fully qualified painter for years and Would never put my life at risk wearing an 'altered' helmet. I've done a few that are just for decorative purposes. If image is more important than safety, then bin your helmet and get a cool haircut.

@@TheScottishSprayer I was wondering about that. Would like to customize my helmet but have been wary of it, since all methods found ultimately affect the integrity of the helmet, be it by sanding or using paint that can be corrosive. Masking tape- How long do you leave paint to dry before peeling off masking tape and how long should freshly sprayed paint dry before sticking masking tape on top of it? Finishing lacquer- I have spraymax 2K lacquer, is it safe on helmets and how many coats do I do? Could do with some details on the timing of lacquer sanding/finishing as I understand once mixed 2k only lasts 24 hrs? Any help appreciated

Time delay is one big poop or three slices of tuna pizza. If it is chilli pizza only one and a half slice. If you want to be safe use hair spray or ask your helmet producer which chemicals to use.
@obiwan9993

Thankyou. I have ordered the pizza as I’m thinking the only big poop I’ll be able to conjure up is the pile of it that used to be a useful helmet. I am a bit concerned about sustainability of tuna fish stocks not to mention ingesting the levels of heavy metals n pcb’s in larger fish so I went with magherita which was also much cheaper, hope this won’t effect the helmets finish?! Emailed Spraymax 2K, they say YES to plastics but need adhesion promoter which I have so time for me to daydream about the amazing job I’m gonna do straight out of the box after a 20+ yr hiatus of doing nothing with paint. It looks great but the divergence is in the details. How much to wait between different coats, when and how to take the masking tape off. Clear coats in between all important stuff witch you’ve skipped. If someone starts by himself and don’t know he’ll screw up his only one helmet.

5 minutes. And yes you can do all that. Take the masking tape off like I did several times in the video.

How long did you wait after the clearcoat until you started wetsanding? I've made the mistake of wetsanding too soon (only dried for 24h) and got all sorts of weird defects. Sanded down and started over, lessons learned. Great video, thanks for the tips!
