I used washer fluid to thin Behr interior satin acrylic latex. Worked well. Sprayed ok and no problems with drying. Paint is white and I saw no color change due to blue fluid. Thanks for the tip.

I have also used washer fluid when spraying latex. I've done white and it doesn't add any tint of blue to the color. I have used a dab of floetrol too. It shoots and lays down nice. I will be doing a new closet door (6 panel) this week sometime.

Haven't tried the washer fluid yet. I've been thinning one quart of latex primer with 2 ounces of tap water and 1 ounce of Floetrol and spray through a 1.8 tip with the Harbor Freight purple gun...end result is perfect. This weekend will be finish coat of Sherwin Williams Emerald waterborne enamel. (Note: the purple gun only comes with a 1.4 tip. I used a #50 drill bit to widen the nozzle opening to 1.8mm without any problems).

I read about guys using a 5/64 bit to open the hole which is around 2mm afterwards but also read guys saying they didnt even need to open the nozzle to 2mm since they mixed floetrol and water and just used the purple gun's 1.4mm nozzle. I even read a few guys saying they didnt even need to add any floetrol/washer fluid to their latex paint.. some said they added a bit of water and the HF purple gun with 1.4mm nozzle worked fine. They all said however that you must clean it perfectly and itll keep performing perfectly for years without any mods. I guess you just need to have it thinned out right and the right air pressure. Im curious as to how well itll paint with using a little bit of washer fluid and water combo instead of just washer fluid since floetrol/washer fluid are not thinners but instead prolong the time it takes for the paint to dry allowing for the paint to flatten out nicely for a perfect finish. Yes they make the paint have a lower viscosity since liquid was added but chemically theyre not thinning it.. more or less just diluting it and even to the point where it can weaken the paint and not stick as well nor have as much strength once it hardens. So thats why I love to hear about water+windshield washer fluid mixes with latex. I feel a little of each is the ideal mix instead of just straight up windshield washer fluid.

I personally would not use windshield wiper fluid as there are probably too many different brands & formulations of the summertime blue colored washer fluid resulting in inconsistency. Its seems too risky and potentially will cause a problem . Why take a gamble with your time & hard work ? It would suck if washer fluid caused a issue and you had to re- do . For time tested proven results , you can simply use 15% warm water for thinning latex paint. In fact, that is what most paint manufacturers recommend & they also write it on the paint can for thinning instructions . In addition, this gentleman is using a large 2.2 spray tip according to what's written in the description . That 2.2 tip will help alot when spraying latex. Even with mentioning the above, His gun looked like it was spraying the latex beautifully. ( Just some 02 cents from a nobody. )

What about adding rubbing alcohol?
@Matt_spalding82
4 жыл бұрын
Windshield washer solvent is Isopropyl alcohol. Also it is 90% or stronger alcohol, rubbing alcohol has more water. And the fluid is cheaper than buying rubbing alcohol or even isopropyl alcohol. The dyes are usually food grade dyes so they aren't harmful. The 90% won't freeze in your car, and it also dries faster on windshields than rubbing alcohol would. Thus mixing it in paint dries faster and the dye also disappears. My dad use to make windshield washer solvent for toyota plants in Kentucky and Indiana. We tried using that same dye as a marker for mixing with weed killers and it disappears when the sunlight hits it, not matter how strong we mixed it. So when dilluted it will disappear in paint also. Been using it for years on doors and trim with exellent results

I did this three days ago, painted 5 desk drawers. They look great, but for some reason its taking a long time for the paint to get good and hard. Is it because of the wiper fluid?
@zacharydmcdaniel

GriffinsFanChris I would think the alcohol in the washer fluid would actually dry the paint faster. Are you using new paint or old paint?

Brand new paint, Sherwin-Williams Emerald interior trim paint. The drawers look excellent, they feel more cured by the day, but they still feel "soft" and almost with a bit of tack left.

I've seen this before and have used it---it's a popular 'trick', but there's no way it CAN'T add a slight tint to white paint! It's common sense----you are adding something blue to something white----it doesn't just magically 'go away'. It might be so slight that you don't notice it immediately, and it might still look white compared to darker colors, but if you need a pure white, don't add blue washer fluid to your paint! Don't say you weren't warned.......
@splash5974
6 жыл бұрын
Sign Man Hahaha Guess you dont know much about paint! First of all, the blue is so transparent and minimal, that it will add no affect to the paint at all! Second, most guys that want a bright white, will get the guys at the paint store to add a little bit of blue toner to the gallon of white. And it has to be a concentrated blue or again, no affect! Please dont give advice if you're not qualified or experienced to do so!
@timdgsr
6 жыл бұрын
Just because you don't see the tint (due to minimal amount of dye) doesn't mean it's not there. Also love that you're declaring on behalf of "most guys" that they want bright white paint. If anyone commenting here is not qualified to do so, it is you. I've read about this trick before, but can't help but think of what's in windshield fluid? Water, alcohol, blue tint, a surfactant or foaming agent possibly? Just cut the paint with water. It's cheaper and works fine.
