Hi Xav, Clare, Adele and Mark.... Middle-Englander here... Just a quick note to say that when I hear bonsai people say 'muck', I'm aware that they mean some kinda sticky, fine clay mix... But if I see a sign down a country lane saying "Muck for sale", I'm also pretty aware that they're selling a stinkier byproduct!

Super interesting video! I love that time lapse, and really love the mint coloured pots - even if they are not suitable for the azaleas. The one thing I've learned is that dwarf varieties never act the same as the standard equivalents. Always less vigorous and more temperamental. In nature, they often only survive as 'sports' on their standard size parents. Look forward to an update on the repots.

That's interesting to hear Sue. These have always flowered but neveer really pushed on from their oriignal size. In fact - as I mention they have been slowly dwindling. Hopefully bigger pots may have a positive impact :)

Fingers crossed you Azalea are not on a spiral to oblivion, i've given up on Azalea and Fuji cherry. I have never kept them alive more than 3 seasons. Plenty of other flowering shrubs/trees which are much more hardy and easier to maintain.

Hello Xavier, I also have the problem with sick azaleas. Something must have gone wrong during the winter. I also repotted them this year, although I had already done that last year. They were previously in special potting soil - now they are in a mixture of Kanuma with lava and pine bark. I forgot to add sphagnum moss because I was in a hurry to mix more substrate. Of course it was not enough for two tiny pots. I also hate touching Kanuma without gloves. I keep my fingers crossed for your azaleas! Best regards, Ari

Dwarf azalea 😢 Mine never looked healthy, and though I got some flowers in my second year, it was so visibly a desperate last push before it died. The foliage never seemed to develop at all. Raisin detra? Made from Aussie grapes? That time lapse was very well done 👏

Hi Xavier, beautiful trees 😍 Regarding to the sickness: Just found out, that the drinking water, I use to water my plants, has got a quite high ph of 7.8. Which is not ideal for some of the trees, especially pine and maples. I do not have azaleas, but I read there prefered pH should be around 6.5. Maybe this could be a helpful approach to your issue. Meanwhile I‘m experimenting with coffee grounds to acidify my soil. 😄 Keep you updated. Please also do 😘 Cheers 🙋♀️ Martina

Good tip about coffee grounds - my wife used to toss all her grounds over my trees. Very pretty seeing the sludge slide down the leaves and trunk :)

@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat No Xavier, not tossing around, but add in small amounts (completely dried out before, so no mould develops) to the water. It is completely flushed inside the soil and not even seen on the surface. My trees respond perfectly well up to now. Pushing and flushing new leaves out a week later. I can imagine there exists an other chemical way too. I love coffee in many ways, so I‘ll proceed my trial. 😄😘 Enjoy your day 🙏

I have a couple of nursery dwarf azalea too, that i want to transfer to bonsai pots with kanuma clay, but im a bit afraid of teasing the root mat out of the nursery soil because of its water retention, and ripping the fine roots, its a bit of a conundrum because i could , damage them if i do or if i dont , any advice on this ?
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat

I think this is a conundrum we all face. I used a combination of spraying water and thhhen teasing out very carefully with a fine chopstick. Now is a good time and you could safely lose 50% of the rootball. I would be trying to open out the roots at this stage and removing as much nursery soil as i could then repot with a mixture of the Kanuma and sphagnum. Go slowly and you should be fine :)

Hi Xav I have given up on Azalea’s they are a pain in the neck, a few weeks if your lucky enjoy the flowers, I lost two last year. Harry Harrington sold me a large Rhododendron indicum the only small leaf Rhododendron, spent a couple of weeks looking at it before I styled it. I assume the work your doing was much earlier in the year, some nice little trees but as you says parts die off for no reason Cheery are the same lovely flowers but look nothing the whole rest of the year. Stop this Common sense nonsense it’s not you. All the best my friend.
