I find the biggest thing with pruning roses is being bold and brave! I often go out with good intentions, but then lose my nerve because I can't bear cutting what looks like healthy leaves and branches. But as a result, my roses have become tall and leggy. I need to learn not to be afraid!

You will see that your roses will do well after pruning them! Just start with one of your roses and prune it back and see how that goes. Roses bloom on the new wood they grow this year, so they will bloom anyway and because of pruning they usually grow more flowers.

Hi, did you find out the way to save the branches?
@seangallagher1947

Same… All you really “need” to trim is the dead stuff and a few of the thinner branches to divert more water to the rest of the plant and encourage more growth. I like to let my roses grow in a little bit thicker, and then prune every spring. Also, deadhead throughout the growing season to encourage more blooms.

I did some deadheading, I don't have the heart to prune this drastically yet. But my rose plant grows many new buds and branches at the bottom. Are these suckers? Should I just let them grow to see whether they are going to do well or should I trim now when they are still small?

This is a wonderful informative video. Thank you for sharing this demonstration. How I can identify the difference between a stem that is 1 or 2 years old? I've been very fortunate with growing roses and too keep them coming back year after year. A couple years ago, I moved from Rhode Island to the Midwest (am thinking zone 5a or 6b), and was very lucky to find an entire shelf of pink double and sunny knock-out roses and Hybrid Tea Roses selling for $2.00, vs. $25 from other local sellers. Must've been my lucky day! I purchased about 15, and went back for more. I've never had any training, but have a natural knack for gardening. My only concerns are w/last year's warm weather that kept my roses blooming through the end of November. Now, it's only less than 3 months later, and many of the very thick stems are still green, have buds already, (Hybrid Tea Roses -->are standing at 6-8 feet tall), and w/many thorns. I've never seen anything like it in terms of thickness and height! I'm thinking the warm weather pattern throughout the winter has something to do with this. Right now, I am off to trimming away, but want to thank you again for this great information! Your feedback is much appreciated in advance! Thank you!

+mygalmo It is great to hear your roses are doing so well for you! Usually the two year stems are more woody and brownish in color, while one year stems are still more green. The thick green thorny stem on your tea hybrid roses you are describing are very likely shoots from the rootstock and have to be pruned off. If you leave these, they take over the rose bush entirely. Tea hybrids are grafted onto a rootstock and it happens that the rootstock starts to grow shoots. It is important to be able to distinguish between the actual tea hybrid and the 'wild' rootstock shoots. This is a good time to prune your roses and you can take away those wild shoots now. I have some roses that are not grafted in my yard and even these grow long, think wild shoots, usually later in the season. I just prune them off, because they don't produce as many flowers and are just not nice looking. There is not a lot that can go wrong pruning roses as long as there are a few buds left on the stems. You can take away those thick thorny branches all the way to the soil level or the branch they are sprouting from. Happy Gardening!

The second branch he trimmed that didn't have an outward facing bud, he didn't cut it at an angle. On the previous branch he specifically says to cut at an angle, so is there a reason he didn't cut the 2nd branch at an angle? 2:25
@BylandsGardener

Later on in the video you can see that it is cut under an angle; when the rose is slightly farther away from the camera. Maybe it is just the way that segment was shot, making it look it was cut off straight. There is an outward bud on that branch, but it is one that is not growing yet. He says in the video: it will come.

No not just like that for the second year branch cut @ 1:28. The cut is totally wrong as water will get into the cut and rot out the plant. ALWAYS cut on a 45deg angle so water runs off...

Thank you. I moved into new home developer and EVERY HOME has 6 rose shrubs, two crepe myrtles an one picky azalea. The former owners planted two pear trees. One pear tree give fruit, the other just leaves. Do you have book for beginner gardeners? I’ve been here 10 MONTHS! I’m trying to figure out why my grass stays soggy? It has not rained in twelve days, but my Wellies are a must! I am NOT allowed by the HOA to change any plants/shrubs. I’ve already got this one listed for sale, all because of an HOA I have to pay them the first of the month. Any link to other garden tips you’d can share with me, I’d appreciate it very much! PS: if a homeowner (me) who gets more then three $500 ticket, the HOA will begin foreclosure!

I'm in the PNW and it is mid April. Is it too late to cut the back this much? A neighbor said it is too late in the season to prune very much. But in the past, when I've been 'gentle' I get roses with spindly stems.
@BylandsGardener

Traditionally roses, many other shrubs and trees are pruned during the dormant period. It makes it easy to see the branching structure and predict what the plant will look like when you take out a branch. You can prune your roses any time of the year and it will not harm them, as long as there are a few 'eyes' (buds) left on the branch. At this time of the year, when they are starting to grow, it is much easier to see which branches are dead (no buds will be sprouting) and which buds are growing. Roses flower on new growth, so they will be flowering anyway. When you cut them back later, they will just flower later.

Why do we need to cut the stems on an angle above the outward facing bud.
@BylandsGardener
8 жыл бұрын
+Raheem Carter By pruning on an angle you make sure, (rain) water will flow off and not penetrate the freshly cut off branch too much. This can cause it to rot. The bigger the branch the bigger that chance for this to happen, but it is a good habit to always cut under an angle. Cutting just above the outward facing but, results in that bud starting to grow a new branch. If it were on the inside of the bush, there is not a lot of room to grow, plus it closes up the bush for air to flow through and sunlight. Any plant benefits from airflow and sunlight and that is why to look for outside facing buds while pruning.

What if I prune every branch but leave about 10 inches without leaves. They stop growing and turn to dry. How can I revive it?
@BylandsGardener
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can prune your rose to about 10 inches as long as there are still buds on these branches. The best time to do this is, is early spring when the plants just come out of dormancy. When you cut back hard in summer, it usually takes more time before plants start growing back, just because it can be too hot for them to grow. Make sure to water regularly, to keep the soil moist, but not too wet.

Since you didn't mention it, I guess you don't seal your cuts? I have cane borers here and they drill a hole right down the center of the cane, killing it. Any recommendations?
@BylandsGardener
7 жыл бұрын
No, we do not seal the cuts. I have asked our crop protection manager if there is anything you can do about cane borers and will let you know when I hear back.
@BylandsGardener
7 жыл бұрын
Cane borers are very unusual in our area and our Crop Protection Manager says, he has limited experience with this problem, but thinks it may be a matter of timing your pruning. Pruning during the time of the year when the insect is not flying and therefore less likely to cause damage. You can also ask at you local garden centre. I also found an article which may give you some answers: www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/roses/controlling-rose-cane-borers.htm
