@@ValeRocks For flat track, compression releases work as sort of an engine brake on two strokes since they like to freewheel instead of chug down. The least you use your actual brake, the better. This allows you to shed off speed without fear of locking up the brake or upsetting the rear wheel. Also works great for push starting the bike, and as a kill switch.

@@ValeRocks Also, compression releases are just one-way valves that are usually put in place of the second spark plug hole. Old vintage two strokes would sometimes come with a second spark plug in case one fouls during a long moto. Since flat track races are often a quick few laps, they're ditched for a compression release. You can retrofit one to newer bikes, but it requires a little more modification.

Vale, an engine normally has a slowing down effect caused by the piston compressing the air in the cylinder, when a low gear is on a motorcycle is will slow done almost like applying a rear brake. Most competitive cycles are two strokes which do not have the rotation of the crank for an extra rotation to compress the air, they can fire on every revolution. Two open the combustion chamber with another spark plug hole a two stroke and use a piston slug that compresses air also beside trying to inject fuel into the combustion chamber also. This small washer that can bounce up and down, depending how the air is moving in the chamber will then allow a partial stroke to compress air and slow the engine like a four stroke. Imagine going into a corner and bike slows in front of you, the lever can be pulled and you will feel the two stroke bike slow as though a brake was put on. I used a reed valve on my bikes and this is a spark plug looking release with small flat metal covers on holes on the side of the spark plug. Air passes out of the holes by deflecting or bending the reed valves and so the braking affect works again, only better as reed valves, more openings more air flow. At indoors the releases are used every lap and times per lap are decreased. Concrete indoors, a release can slide the tire somewhat entering, it makes sliding in very easy and consistent. I was beating an undefeated racer at a track in Ohio and about the third or fourth lap the cable pulled out of my Reed Release and I was ahead of him. When this happened he passed me back and I had to start using my rear brakes, which I never used. He got about 5 bikes ahead of me until I got used to using my brake. Thins allowed me to overtake him again. I was faster using compression release but now could race him again. I lead out of turn four and was expecting to win when he crawled past me inside to the line. Should have, Could have, didn't. The release would have allowed me to beat this guy, nobody did in a decade. It is a very well controlled rear brake without using your feet. Fingers are agile and bike gyrations are limited. At asphalt tacks I used the rear brake with a hand lever and was fast at those races. Have to pull lever hard though.

My Ossa Pioneer had a compression release. It would act like a rear brake, but the back tire would not lock up when descending a steep hill covered with loose gravel. It opened a valve in the cylinder head so the engine wouldn't fire, but the two stroke engine still had to compress the fuel/air in the lower crankcase and to a lesser extent in the cylinder. You could add a little rear brake pedal pressure at the same time.

It is also installed in big bore 2 strokes to aid in starting the engine. This allows you to spin the engine faster when kick starting. It is mounted on the side of the cylinder not in the cylinder head.

Why they use the decompression for?

You use a compression release because two strokes don't have compression braking like a four stroke engine does. So you use the release to slow the motor and kick out the back end without using the rear brake.
@bryanwhitton1784

You can also use it to clear out the engine. Sometimes two stroke motors kind of load up and you can clear them out with alternating between throttle and compression release.
