I use to work as a security officer at Springfield Mall in 96-98. I remember when its was really a good place to shop and was thriving. I can honestly say that when they extended the metro to Springfield, that's when the problems started. You are absolutely correct in stating that when the DC/PG county crowd started coming to the mall it started declining. Over the course of a year (97 to 98) we had numerous fights, thefts and other issues. It wasn't the fault of the DC/PG county crowd, it was really just a huge ethnical conflict as the local Springfield Mall crowd wasn't use to the DC/PG county crowd. It was mostly young people that had conflicts with each other. Gangs/crews from the local area didn't click with the DC/PG county gangs/crews. We practiced "banning people from the mall" back then, so I got to talk to so many young people from various ethnic backgrounds and understood the tension/beefs. I know first hand how this mall lost its luster because I was boots on the ground walking through it, patrolling the outside and dealing with the politics of the mall. I know malls are slowly dying, but I do miss Springfield Mall.

Thanks for this video. I think I have been to that newsstand but it was around 1993. I visited Springfield Mall as a teen in the early 80s. Had a lot of fun going to movies and hanging out with friends. I ended up working at General Cinema for a while.

I think of all the movies I saw there back in the 80's. One of our parents would drop 5 or 6 of us off at the mall on Saturday night and somebody else's parent would pick us all up at midnight. Time Out arcades (Yes there were actually 2 of them), Orange Julius, Wendy's, Rockers, Record World, Tape World, where I would later work for a while. It was just a great time to be a Mall Rat. Great video.

I remember some of those places - in the mid 80s I worked at York steakhouse, we might have bumped into each other at some point. Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it!

great video, & great commentary. i remember as a kid, my mom would never take me to springfield mall. she said it was too dangerous. i've gone since the renovation, but she's still quite wary. funny how much a criminal reputation can haunt a place.
@evancortez2

It wasn't always like that though, I worked at the mall in the 80s and it was fine, but then sometime in the 90s the criminal element was introduced, coinciding with the completion of the Franconia-Springfield metro station close by and it all went downhill from there

are you surprised by how well the mall has bounced back? i assume that many other kids my age were also exposed only to haunting stories of springfield mall, which makes it so fascinating how popular the place seems to be today.

Not really, I guess they had contingencies for that, but I'm hoping that as time goes by, it doesn't end up just like the way it did before

sadly there has been some bad crime/incidents since STC reopened. Of course not publicized so some folks still leery of going to the mall @ night etc. Something happened to one of the mall walkers in the morning and some car thefts, a stabbing, an assault by Target. oy vey.

Thanks. That was interesting. We lived in nearby during 1990-1995 and shopped at the Springfield Mall pretty often. I remember hearing about the problems after the Metro came in - which people had initially been excited about. Somebody had told me that when the old mall was torn down it was rebuilt as one of those outdoor mall areas that are popular now. Clearly bad information. The new mall does not look all that different.

Wow i never knew about the carjacking, im pretty sure the Wiki doesn't mention it. The wiki has almost no information about the mall but im really interested in know more about the old mall's history, when i look up photos or info i don't find much. I use to go to the mall when i was a kid around the late 90s and early 2000s, so it would be really great if i could find out more about Springfield mall. Ive only found about 10 pictures of Springfield mall😥 very sad how mall history is forgotten forever, especially malls made in 70s and 80s, which most of are being demolished, renovated, or abandoned and forgotten forever.

Yes in 2008 a 60 year old woman named Bobbi Bosworth was walking to her car in the parking garage when she was abducted at gunpoint by a couple of gangbangers and forced to buy liquor at a nearby convenience store, then she was killed when they crashed her car. Before they built the metro near the mall it was fine, I went there all the time
