Darkness came out one year to the day after my father died, and a lost 17 year old boy found something good again in life. Thanks Bruce, I wouldn't have made it without that record.

Back in the day Bruce played a Les Paul with a Marshall stack and that guitar was thunder!! He played rhythm and lead guitar and was known as 'Alvin Lee By the Sea'. He's since toned down that amazing crunch and reduced the role of the power guitar in his music. You had to be there to believe it, his playing alone gave you the 'chills' - incredible.

The sound of the guitar when he bends the strings at 4:18 gives me goosebumps!! Always thought Bruce got undeserved criticism for his guitar playing style. He ain't no Mark Knopfler, who's a god on the guitar, who plays it completely different and with more "finesse". But the thing is, Bruce plays with passion and intensity, which is expressed in his solos. Bruce plays it like there's no tomorrow. I'd say he's an underrated guitar player, and incredibly fast in those young years. Love this!

There is no one like Bruce. I like classic rock. I like Motown. I like opera. I like jazz, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. I like some rap. Still, Bruce is unique. Melissa Etherige called Springsteen Shakespeare set to music. He is my favorite. I thought he was finished until he had his PBS interview with Charlie Rose. Then, Bruce came out with The Rising, which is excellent. My favorite song of Springsteen, New York Serenade.

One of the best solos I’ve heard from him on this. He did a bunch of improvisational things, mixing up what he was doing, noise, counter point, melody line variations, flash licks, emotional bends, varying quite a bit from the records mid break solo section…all this varying from most of his standard approaches to soloing in this tune live. I was quite surprised. I really wish he hadn’t shelved the guitar god bit. Him and Miami Steve would have been truly legendary in this area if they had really cut loose. But they pretty much left a lot on the table in that regard. Oh well…

Yes, and to all the 'expert' guitar players (who totally overlook Bruce in their 'who's great' discussions), I challenge you to create this kind of energy in your playing. Bruce has a very distinctive raw style, his bends and his 'feel' for the guitar are simply amazing. Max uses mainly Bruce's guitar to monitor every concert - Bruce even makes his rhythm playing look effortless - he routinely nails complicated rhythm parts without even a glance at his axe.

If I am not mistaken I was at that concert if it was at Gammage ---- which incidentally was the last time they let a rock concert perform there ---- the back balconies were shaking ------ I had front row tickets - and I saw him two nights in a row ---- I worked at Diamonds - which had a ticket outlet ----- I was first in line .

I was a rock critic during Bruce's heydey and his Dec. 15 SF Winterland show is my second favorite of all time (833 shows). This video brings back such great memories! I took another critic friend to Bruce that night (he'd never seen them yet) and he spent the whole time on the way to the show saying "I just don't see what you guys see in him" I let him write the review, and still have a copy. He concluded "This was the greatest rock concert I've ever seen!" Bruce could do that to you. Thanks!
