This was helpful. What puts me off corals is all the lingo. I wish there was a dummys guide/glossary. Acros, softies, leathers (kinky corals?) sps that look like lps, zoas etc etc. What goes in what group? Anemone, I know that one. Until I saw a coral that looked like an anemone. Aaarggh

The Reef Dork I dose it according to calcium consumption. In my tiny tank it’s 0.3ml of each daily. It’s making a big difference. Truthfully I haven’t tested the levels so I hope I’m not going overboard.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, so happy you added this video NOW. It's been two weeks since I've added my first rainbow monti and a green hystrix. They've been model citizens - I put them on a random spot and I already see them growing. Unlike the stupid xenia which seems miserable 😣 7 ppm nitrates and 0.01 phosphates is enough for it.

For some reason I don't have luck with SPS in my 220 gallon tank. All the parameters are in place, I confirmed this with an ICP test and my daily Trident testing. I have 4 Radeon XR15 pros and what I consider to be great flow. I have flow coming from my return, 2 mp40's, a gyre and a Nero 5. I used a PAR meter to make sure I meet the PAR requirements for a mixed reef tank. I've tried acropower and reef energy (not at the same time) but no luck whatsoever. Tank is 2 years old and my Euphylia do just fine. I just don't get it!

Great video Alex! I noticed that you have a lot of deep red on you rocks. Is that coralline algae? I have it in my 32 gallon biocube. I used to have cyano bacteria, but it is gone now, I think. it was the same colour.
@ReefDork
4 жыл бұрын
It's not coralline - my uchin ate all that when I got him! I'm pretty sure it's not cyano too - I think it's some kind of sponge, but I can't be sure. It's been there for a long time though and doesn't seem to cause any issues though so all good. Edit - i've just noticed this comment was on an old video. I haven't watched it for a while so it could well be when I had a cyano outbreak!

Get to know your corals, yes. Pentax Papilio binoculars! I have never seen my corals as well before yesterday. Those cunning Montipora nudibranchs cannot hide from the binoculars. I found you you little buggers. Enjoy your dip. 129 euro, or 10% the price of my varilux eyeglasses, and I can see between polyps of SPS, the tissue texture, etc. These work far better than the reef nanoscope that fixes to the glass with suction cup. I will not go coral shopping without them now.

Thank you! My parameters are not stable enough yet for sps. Monti frags fade out after a month or 2. Still just doing reading. Just learned GFO drops alk. Iodine is probably a touch low in many tanks. Another reminder that 'washing machine' flow is probably as/more important than lighting. Thank you!

hi Thanks for the video. i have the same tank as you and i am having trouble with my wave makers. the flow in the tank is pushing the 2 clown fish around. i have now turned them off and just my return pump is on witch is pushing the water nice but im very new to reefing . should i try pulse mode on them. they are vectra MP40s any help many thanks and keep up the good work. paul
@ReefDork
5 жыл бұрын
I'd leave them to it - they'll find somewhere out of the way. I run 2x MP40s at 80%. It you're really bothered, you could turn the pumps down for a bit. Do you have a reeflink? If so, you can set different flow modes throughout the day. If not, reef crest is a good option.

@ReefDork

Probably a reasonable target. But with sps, you more or less can't have too much in my opinion. But it's a case of seeing what works for each tank. 🙂

@ReefDork
5 жыл бұрын
Those are 11,000lph according to the website. So 60% of that is 6,600 x2 = 13,200. Your tank volume will be much less than that so I'd guess 350L ish. So 38x turnover.

Hi how do you raise your ph in your tank and how can I do it in a reef system.
@ReefDork
5 жыл бұрын
I have a large skimmer and lots of surface movement. And I run an algae bed in my sump which is lit on a reverse schedule to my tank lights so my pH remains high over night. Those are the best ways in my opinion. You can also run an airline to your skimmer from outside. There are other ways but those are the easiest and should be enough. 🙂

hi.. stupid question: why do you have this "aesthetic" wallpaper as background of your tank? i understand, that its the wallpaper of your room, but why didnt you choose to give the tank (e.g.) a black background. i saw your wallpaper in several videos now and i find the birds a little bit out of place - next to a coral - and was really wondering why someone has this background for his tank.. until i saw your room... but still... just asking...
