"It is nice to hold, nice to have." Cheaper than a Jack Wolf. That is what had me sold.

Funny enough, I had exactly that in mind while I was making this review. I like Jack Wolf knives, but if you ask me, the Swayback does an even better job modernizing - and highlighting the best aspects of! - this traditional blade shape.

Been Carrying a spyderco swayback for a couple years now. I absolutely love it, and it has replaced the sebenza I used to carry; it's better in almost everything, and I absolutely love the CTS-XHP blade, it holds an edge several time longer then the CR S35VN. There's a LOT of sebenza-dna in this one ... However, I have large hands, and I rounded mine off more near the lanyard hole so it doesn't dig in my hand, I enlarged the access to the opening hole a bit, and I added a sharpening notch. Perfect knife.

Glad you're enjoying it! This one has really impressed me in use...it is SUPER sharp. Over time, I've found it to be my favorite of the Spyderco Slysz models. I do love my Sebenzas, so it doesn't QUITE reach that level for me, but I can see why a lot of folks will like it more. It's sharper, it's got more interesting ergonomics, and the blade shape is super practical. Either way, both great options!

@@CTKKnives Well what did it for me is the superstable but also superthin behind the edge CTS-XHP. I've been rough with this knife, and I've sworn several times I'd broken off the tip, only to find it was still there and straight. And CR's S35VN at 58-ish or lower doesn't keep a sharp-feeling edge for long, I don't know why, while this blade keeps an edge significantly longer. The mods though allow easier opening, and the rounding around the lanyard hole makes it instantly more comfortable.

Hey Clark - EXCELLENT REVIEW! i recently picked up a Spyderco Swayback from a small, local supplier that surprisingly still had a new one in stock! I agree with a lot of the points you mentioned about this knife. It is a bit more 'form' over 'function' in a few aspects (e.g. small cut-out to access spydie hole, not good for Southpaws, hot-spot on the back of knife handle pokes into palm a bit), but, otherwise, I feel many reviewers are overly critical of the Spyderco Swayback and excessively 'hate' on it. I'm in the LOVE IT camp. It is a BEAUTIFUL knife and such a great slicer with that hollow-ground blade! It has such a fine tip, so I don't use mine for any hard-use tasks, but it is such a joy to use and so classy looking! That was surprising about the early lock-up that made the lock unstable you mentioned. I have not had that issue with mine, but it is an important safety issue to make people aware of. To me (especially as a right-handed person), I'm willing to tolerate some of the aspects that are not quite as functional to have a such a cool looking blade that cuts in light-medium duty edc tasks so well. I agree with what you said - it makes me "happy" to use it. As an analogy, I really love LionSteel fixed blades with wooden handle scales. Even though some of the steels they use might not be the best in the world, and their construction might not be as tough for me to "pound on" like some other outdoor/bushcraft/survival knives (e.g. Fixed blades from BK Becker/Ka-Bar, Cold Steel, TOPS, ESEE, etc.), I STILL LOVE TO USE THEM! The crowned spines, the beautiful wood grain, the nice texture milled into the handles, the quality leather sheaths, etc. make LionSteel fixed blades a joy to use! I think the reality of how most of us use our knives is far from the extreme situations we imagine we might possibly use our knives (someday when the SHTF), so it's OK to have a few beautiful knives that might not fare well in a 'JOE X knife review', but they will still provide many years of faithful service and do it with some STYLE!

Ended up ordering one for 215$. Should be here soon. Can't wait to get it. Been on my radar since it was teased in 2014? 2015? Finally pulled the trigger.

Maybe adding more tension on the lockbar will fix the early lockup issue.

Nice video! I love my swayback. I did jump the gun when I bought mine. I got it from a large site in Finland, it was the closest retailer that had it in stock. I paid around 450 dollars, so ouch! I still love it 🙂

That’s quite a price, but I know buying knives internationally can get tough and expensive. Fortunately, you picked a good one, and after a little while, that sticker shock will be a distant memory.
