When little me and my mum were playing through this game many years ago we bought a playstation magazine which had the location of all 80 dragons. Actually it had 79 - the missing dragon was the one from Haunted Towers. We phoned up the magazine, who put through to some other people, who put us through to the writer of the article, who finally explained to us that they weren't able to find the final dragon in time for the article to be printed. Luckily he had since found the dragon and was able to walk us through it on the phone. Whoever you are sir, you were our hero!
@sku4594

Glad someone else remembers this. I needed just that one dragon, and the Playstation magazine claimed it had the guide to all of them on it's cover. Imagine my disappointment when the magazine claimed that the final dragon did not exist in Haunted Towers and it was a glitch. I could see and hear it wobbling through the ceiling! It was definitely there. Yet the official Playstation magazine claimed it didn't exist. It made it all the more satisfying when I managed to finally figure it out all by myself. I had outsmarted the official Playstation magazine and I felt like a total genius.

The problem about Haunted Towers that alot of people don’t mention is that once you finally get to that secret room you have to climb the stairs to get to the top where you get the perma-superflame. The whole room is filled with invisible haunted armors that will come to life once you get too close to them. You would think to yourself ”well we just try to carefully bypass them and deal with them once we got the superflame” but here’s the thing: The last haunted armor at the VERY TOP of the stairs is programmed to ONLY BLOCK you, and it’s impossible to get past it. So you basically have to get to the top of the stairs very quickly before it comes to life. If you don’t make it you have to start the level all over again, which means YOU HAVE TO DO THAT DREADED SUPERSPEED SECTION ALL OVER AGAIN!

I agree that Tree Tops and Haunted Towers are obtuse as hell, but not Jacques. You declared it unintuitive just after explaining how you successfully intuited it based on the fact the other imps caused something to happen in the level.
@BloodiedYetUnbowed

The level I will remember forever is Haunted Towers for sure. Tree tops was definitely the second hardest but I don't remember how I completed that one as a child. But Haunted Towers frustrated me to no end because of that damn hole in the roof and because I could see and hear the dragon up there but had no idea how to get it. At some point I decided to commit to finishing "that level" I kept screwing around doing random stuff and figured it out. After doing it I was like "holy shit ! So that's how you do it !" and I was so happy because I got 100% and was able to get into Gnasty's loot level.

Most of these design choices only remind me how great this game is. It doesn't treat the player like a baby as later games do, but encourages thinking outside the box and focusing on details. It's honestly good level design in my book.

Gotta say, despite the lack of polish found in Spyro 2 or 3, I always found that the first game in the series had the most character, whether it be the designs of the levels themselves, or the atmospheric, and memorable sound track. In fact, the game's lack of over all polish, kind of gave it an experimental vibe, a feeling that few other games have really stirred in me. Don't get me wrong, if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Spyro 2, but for some reason or another, I always find myself coming back to the original tittle, just to experience this odd semi iconic bit of intrigue, and now nostalgia. I actually don't remember Tree Tops being hard, but rather very fun. There wasn't much that stumped me in this game and I always found it a little too easy, but Haunter Towers... That destroyed me. I went through a whole range of emotions, including at times thinking my game was in a bugged state. I remember assuming there was supposed to be a whirlwind that took you up to that hole. Unfortunately, I never solved it as a child because I believe Spyro 2 came out as I was still banging my head on that one last dragon.

This is the fun of the game though - an intended challenge for those dedicated to working it out. It isnt supposed to be something you look at and go "oh well I know how to get there no problem", and in fact people remember them more because of the struggle. Its a cool way of getting players to experiment with the mechanics and level design, to look carefully and think about the layout of the land. I think that's worth appreciating. To conclude all that, I dont really like the insinuation that these areas were 'poorly designed'. They weren't. Every aspect of figuring it out was intentional.

It's funny how you nailed my exact thoughts with your "10-year old Philip" comments. I got this game for my 9th birthday, and while my mom was putting me to sleep, I wept: "Mom, I tried everything but I still can't get past 99% in Spyro." "You'll get it, she said." I actually played the game all over again to finally catch that cutscene for the tip how to get 100%. With 10-year old English knowledge as a foreign language. And without Internet or written guides. A kid's devotion is really something! Now watching this video I'm really wondering if I even want to play the PS4 remaster to feel this frustration again or should I just leave it in the past as a great memory of achieving something great.

I couldn't figure out the Treetops one on my own because there was nothing to prepare me for it, but once learning about how to do it I was easily able to use that knowledge to figure out the Haunted Towers one. All I had to do was see the platform and realize I hadn't been on that one yet. Then it just took a bit of thinking about the location of everything and some logic and I managed it. They didn't do a good job of introducing the concept, but if you know the concept the rest becomes much more intuitive.

This video popped up in my recommendations when I had to look for help with Tree Tops, lol. Frankly I don't get the problem with the Jacques level. I instantly 100%ed this one, no sweat. I think I died just once because I botched an actually easy jump. The thing is that before even reaching this level I had already learned what those clock suckers are for and I had already seen the column in question while exploring the level before reaching the guy you have to hit to lower it. I think this one was very fair and sensibly designed. Can't quite argue with Tree Tops and Haunted Towers, though. I _did_ see that balcony on Haunted Towers and assumed that I need to get there somehow for 100% but the route you have to take looks just so unintuitive, almost impossible, that I would have never discovered it. I won't even comment on the routes you need to take to reach the two thieves on the Tree Tops level - taking those looks almost like bug using. One thing I _can_ say in the developers' defence, though, is this: you don't _need_ these to finish the game. I think it's absolutely okay that it takes a crapload of effort and determination to get the entirely _optional_ 100%. It's not like I feel I've never finished a GTA game because I never maxed out either one of them.

I like Tree Tops a lot because it encourages more three dimensional thinking. The rest of the game is mostly linear. And you can see it with the super charge boost ramps. They all go in specific directions and even point you in what direction you're supposed to go. And indeed you think logically that you should just keep going in the linear path you've always been going and you'll solve the level somehow But Tree Tops is different. It forces you to actually experiment and see the level from a different angle. How can you use the resources you're given, and solve the problem. It's treated less like just an obstacle you run through and more like an actual puzzle. It's one of the few moments in the entire game that feels like an actual puzzle and it doesn't feel as contrived as some other games because it's entirely optional to find that dragon (unless you wanna unlock Gnasty's loot). Infact the entire level is optional since you can freely skip levels in that game.

A part of me gets frustrated and hates these moments but also not too cryptic to feel hopeless. I admit I gave in on those super charge jumps (not the Jaques one) but one I had problems with for a moment is jumping through that cracked gate down in the river of Metalhead to get to the upper level. The level design gives hints. I Iooked at one side on the river and the bars are sealed and the other side theres no gate and a platform. You gotta spend time looking around the level and think. And it makes stop for a moment and remember most corners of the game.

I never found Jacques very hard at all. I figured that fool was for the tall platform but there was a ton of trial and error and I did end up having to run back n forth a million times. I definitely had to search up years later how to complete tree tops. When I was a kid I couldn’t get it at all I didn’t even know that platform was over there I never noticed it, until when I was older and decided to revisit it and get 100% and realised I was missing a fair amount of treasure and a dragon, and had to search it in the end. Haunted towers is the same, not until I was older wanting to get 100% I noticed there was some treasure I didn’t have so I tried doing something with that supercharge ramp and try after try after try after try after try after TRY I couldn’t get all the way around that lil circle ramp thing, mind u I didn’t get far enough to try most the time cause I’d just fly off the side or run into something trying to handle the speed Spyro had as he ran. So I checked online again and found the solution, you had to jump UP OFF THE SIDE TO GO BACK UP UNDER THAT ARCH AND UP ONTO THIS PLATFORM ID NEVER SEEN BEFORE. Anyways, I did it and then trying to fly and charge around those empty suits of armour but kept running into em which slowed me down. Every time I charge to the end that last fucking guy jumped up and blocks my way holy shit it made me so goddam angry. Nowadays I’m bunch better at the game I’ve completed it countless times and love to replay it every chance I get. It’s a great game and one of my favourites

man you made the tree tops island jump way harder than it needed to be. you can just hook the first ramp's jump around and use the final ramp

I remember playing this game with my dad when I was younger and I know we definitely looked up how to do Tree Tops, because that was the one level we couldn't do, but I have no idea how we found the secret area in Haunted Towers? I'm all but sure I never looked it up until I was older and had forgot how to do it

Wild Flight took me AN HOUR to complete. Good god I hated that level. It was the last level I needed to unlock Gnastys treasure.

I haven't finished Spyro. In fact I took a break from it more than a year ago and haven't gone back to it since. I don't even remember if I got to the first level you showed. I know I completed the Treetops level without any help. I think I had to look online for how to get to the last platform in Haunted Towers. The parts that have given me the most trouble are the flying levels. The stationary targets aren't too bad, but having to chase down the moving ones within the strict time limit is a royal pain in the ass. In fact, it was a flying level that I left off on. I got really frustrated just trying to find all the targets, never mind hitting them. I'm using an emulator and I always planned to go back and try it with a proper right-handed joystick instead of the stupid thumbstick, but I just haven't had the ambition to do it.

I recommend it with all my heart that you return to it, with it being my favourite game, it satisfies me so much to complete the game. Plus, the 100% bonus is satisfying af.

Definitely Remembered 3 over 1 but I loved that game design of 1. See, Spyro 1 graphics to this day gives me terrible motion sickness. Made it hard to play, harder to beat.

i have always found games extremely hard as i have thumb deformities and (as i found out when i was 18) cerebral palsy (i always knew i had something wrong with me but nobody listened to me until i saw a neurologist when i was 18 to find out why i kept breaking my ankle and i was so clumsy) so i always presumed that was why i found the first game so hard. i only found out its a really hard game in the past few years (im almost 24).

That last dragon the one that is hard asf to reach (on tree tops) He was the only dragon I never got a child. Best believe I’ll be getting him this time around. I can’t handle another 99% complete game. Nightmares lol.

Nice video! But I do disagree when you say that the part in Jack Q's is unintuitive. Since it is a secret area I'm pretty sure it was SUPPOSED to be a hard puzzle. Remember this is back when video games were actually hard. And I don't remember exactly how I got to the secret area in Tree Tops, but I'm 120% sure there's a much simpler path to get there than what you showed. xD

I feel like this game was not the most difficult. Perhaps I was lucky and figured out all the non-intuitive maps on my own, but going by my own frustration and possibly time taken to beat these games, Ripto's Rage got me. I believe it had a mechanic in which enemies scaled in difficulty the less you were hit / faster you went (but some mini games and lack of health with many enemies were what did it for me)
