Extreme turbulence hit Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ321 from London to Singapore on Tuesday (May 21). A 73-year-old died of a suspected heart attack during the incident and scores of passengers and crew were injured. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft experienced a 6,000-foot (1.8km) drop within four minutes. While turbulence can cause planes to lose altitude quickly, Michael Daniel, managing director of consultancy firm Aviation Insight, tells CNA’s Singapore Tonight it could have been the pilots reacting to the situation.
