Isolated footings are generally of 2 types in shape. Square footing or rectangular footing. Preference is for square footing for square columns and rectangular footing for rectangular columns. The footing design video in todays post explains the reason for this.
Isolated footings are designed mainly for 3 things
For the moment in the footing
For the shear force in the footing
The punching shear force in the footing
The first 2 are dependent on the cantilever of the footing measured from the edge of the column. This decides the total depth of the footing. Lesser the cantilever the better. This aspect decides the shape of the footing and this is dependent on the column shape.
Same way, when you provide a square footing for a rectangular column, one cantilever is large. You can optimise it by making the cantilevers same there by reducing the longer cantilever.
The video explains this aspect in detail and will enable to decide if you have to prefer square footing or rectangular footing.
