I’m just getting ready to release a rescue. Thank you for taking the time to make your video. It gives me extra reassurance seeing how professionals do it. You do an AMAZING JOB. It’s not as easy looking after wild creatures as people probably think it is. I know I found it harder and more worrying than I thought it would be.

Very good information. My neighbor found a baby squirrel last night (NE AZ) and brought it to me. We immediately began researching squirrel care online. While my nieces wanted to keep it, my belief is wild animals need to be free and our job is to care for and prepare them to return to their natural environment, rather than caving to our natural desires to create dependence. It's a good lesson for the girls. Having raised abandoned kittens, I know the proper care required for a baby animal is specific and intensive. I also know wild animals have unique requirements. I appreciate you providing such clear and useful instructions. Thank you!

I rescued a drenched baby squirrel laying on its side. I've kept him warm inside the house for almost a week. I want to return him to his mother if it will ever stop raining.

We found a baby squirrel (pinky) after the hurricane last year. Raised him up and tried the same process as you. But he did not want to go into the wild. He came back to us 3 times (after release) before he finally told us he doesn’t want to go. So we now have a legit pet squirrel.

He’s gonna be 4 mo. old in November here in the cold NorthEast. Does all this still apply in that case? Or should he stay inside til the Spring?

I had the same issue, so I waited the winter. It was a very long winter this year, and just now I’m starting the release process. He is now 8 months old, and has gotten quite used to being around me, so it might be longer for him to wilden up.

I know of someone who is only opening the rc door when the squirrel shows up and if they don't go in while he's standing there then he close it because they have rats mice and many other squirrels visiting. The squirrel seems suspicious of the door, maybe smelling the other squirrels on it. Does this seem okay or would you just leave the nb open no matter who goes in and out. Do the squirrels usually come back and sleep in their rc? This squirrel hasn't slept in it but is starting to visit now that it's been a few days.

I have been raising one since he was tiny, he is 3 1/2 months old, and extremely attached to me. If I put him in another room he screams until I come get him..it breaks my heart!! I want him to be happy and live free so I know I have to start thinking about a cage, but honestly I am going to have such a hard time when he calls for me ):

First, THANK YOU for saving his life. Thank you for being kind. Second, can you let him come and go as he pleases? Leave the cage outside and he will do what he wants, which should be easier on you and him too. This release can be a mutual agreement between the two of you.

Beverly Hoberg Beverly, do you know if I should put my late summer born squirrel out at 4 mos. or wait til Spring? We’re going to build a release hutch for him, and he’s about 3 mos. old but we’re wondering if he should stay inside til Spring, it being so cold in Massachusetts. Or do we just give him his warm fleecy home inside a wooden box til he makes his own in a nesting box we’ll also provide, then mount on the tree above the cage when we release him? That’ll still give him the first one if he returns at night. If we put him out at 4 Mo. he’ll have to spend the whole winter there I would think. I could not get any rehabbers to answer their phones. And their message boxes were full. I tried!

Hello I am in the releasing process and I noticed that the squirrel is not interested in going to the nest we built inside the Cage. How is their behavior when they go to the first time to the release cage ?
@carolynb.9003

it usually takes the squirrels a few days before they will sleep in the new nest box

How do you determine if they have "wilded" up enough?

the squirrel will no longer wont you near the cage, they will do their little grunt and growl while shuffling their feet at you.

How do you perform multiple releases. I am having trouble releasing all of my squirrels right now because the ones that got ready sooner are territorial and are running their sisters back to our porch area/ release tree

I open the cages one at a time, few weeks apart, and allow the squirrels that want to leave to wander off and the ones that need more time I lock them up every night then let them out during the day until they leave as well.

When do I remove the squirrel house from the cage and put it in a tree?

if you only have the one nest box I would place it up in the tree the first day the squirrels venture away for a while
