I prefer to handfeed birds. Funnily it's the little ones who get overexited, so ocationally give you a nip. Crows, and even the most hungry seagull know the difference between food and fingers.... Squirrels get to help themselves to peanuts, walnuts, coconut shavings, and raisins. Carefully offered on a plate. Love from Norway 😘 🇸🇯

Thanks so much for the kind words! I’ve been trying to get the birds to eat sunflower seeds from my hand, but they’re not interested so far. 😁 The squirrels are very gentle, but their eyesight directly in front of their nose isn’t very good. They get unsalted peanuts, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pecans and hazelnuts. 😁❤️🐿

@@SquirrelTheater Try offering bits of Gouda cheese...🧀🐦 Few birds can resist yummy fat cheese ! I found this out while lunching in a park in downtown Oslo. When the weather allowed for it, during summer. My sandwich didnt last long, so I started bringing a loaf of brown bread. And then some... My feathered new friends caused Bedlam at my feet, over the bread slices, while one clever young crow seated himself by my shoulder. On the back rest of the park bench. He knew that good behaviour would be rewarded, eagerly watching my cheese sandwich... By the end of summer he'd become a little bottom heavy. Having gone through a menu of soft bread, banana, grapes, cheese, brioche buns, and old croissants.🐦⬛ Love from Norway 😘🇸🇯

Most every time, the squirrel 🐿️ realizes the error, and they tend to freak out, thinking 🤔 yer gonna attack them in return.. Most all, get better at it over time.. They're so nervous!!!! I’ve found that 99% of the time, it’s simply a case of mistaken identity when they do bite and it almost never results in any injury. I think it’s more startling for the squirrels and for me when it happens! They’re actually really gentle creatures by nature. I’m only dealing with wild squirrels though as it’s illegal where I live to have a pet squirrel. 😊🐿

I've got a few squirrels (and a chipmunk) that jump up the stairs to get hand-fed, but they always try and nibble my finger if I'm holding nuts out flat on my hand, rather than holding them between my finger and thumb. Don't really hurt because I flinch too quickly or they realize that it's a finger and not a nut they've got, but still kinda unsettling!

Squirrels can't see well in front of their nose/mouth due their eyes being on the side. It's best to hold a nut with two fingers as far back as possible so they can grab onto it without biting you. Also, being slow and gentle without making sudden moves can help to keep them calm, especially the skiddish ones.

@@SquirrelTheater- I have four cute little squirrels which come to my back porch every morning between 7 to 8am, waiting for me to hand them treats. Their favorite treat is small crunchy pretzel nuggets with dry peanut butter filling, which they think is a tasty nut since the filing rattles inside. I buy it cheap at a grocery store in a large plastic jar labeled "Pretzel Nuggets with Peanuts" which I love myself, but the squirrels love it even more. hehe The great thing about the pretzel nuggets is that they eat it all without making a mess like with hard shelled nuts. ;)
