The trap was not set up properly. He set up one side closed while the other side open but did not put the locking wire at the top at right position. No wonder the squirrel could push the door open and ran away.

they love peanut butter but I have seen them lick it off the plate without setting off the trap.

The way you are setting the trigger, it holds the door open . You need to put the straight wire on the outside of the loop wire, and under the loop. You can see the way you are doing it, when it trips, that the straight wire goes into the loop of the other wire and keeps the door from closing completely.

The other fact is that the squirrel sees the front door drop and feels the rear door drop with its tail hairs and leaps backward before the latch locks. I have watched it happen. That particular trap type is better for small rabbits and rats.

What a terrible trap design. With a single-entry dropcage trap he'd have been easily caught.

Lium it is a single entry trap design if you want it to be,he just set it another way which allowed the squirrel to get out.

the bait is supposed to be at the far end of a single door trap, that way it walks over the trigger, it was set up wrong.

Your not supposed to put the bait on the trigger plate which caused the escape.

Agreed. I use these traps to catch stray cats around my house. I use dental floss to tie chicken wings on the far inside end of the trap. I have a big squirrel problem. The good ol' Big Cat Gamo usually takes care of them.

One year, I "caught" and transported 23 squirrels in a single season. Most of the neighbors in my neighborhood always claim how they love living in this suburb BECAUSE of the wildlife (they are the ones that feed the Geese and attract the other rodents). But, don't worry...I have given them all lakefront or riverfront views at the locations that I release them at. I know that it is not a legal way to do it....but for GOD's sake, we have an over population of them that no-one seems to acknowledge. And these suburban rats with bushy tails are destructive as hell. Transplanting them into areas (always at least a mile or two away so that they do not revisit my neighborhood) seems to work best . Should I kill them? Perhaps. But I still like to think this is a better way than drowning them and then stuffing those things in the garbage (and boy, do they ever start to stink after a few days)!

Duck tape a sinker weight to the trap door to make it close faster and make sure latch is actually holding door down when closed.

Yep. The weak point of this trap is the door springs are pretty weak, and the squirrels can push it open before it locks shut. I place a weight on the door, and it gets them every time. Hauled over 100 away so far.

That's no ordinary squirrel! He got bit by a radioactive spider, and now he's got super fast reflexes. There's no trap that can hold him!😎
