brilliant... 1. introduce a new, more standardized derailleur hanger to finally eliminate the mess they were before 2. get as many manufacturers to play along as possible 3. now you've got thousands of frames prepared for your new drivetrain all around the world. A derailleur attaching directly to the frame would have been completely impossible before with what feels like every single frame having a different derailleur hanger and frame design around it. Now the market is becoming ready for such a radical change to derailleurs.

Do Sram engineers understand the purpose of a derailleur hanger? A - it protects the Derailleur, B - it protects the frame from getting damaged. With it mounted to the axle the force is now getting applied directly to the frame and to the Derailleur. Surely an integrated derailleur hanger into the design would of been the best approach to still make it easy to set up and to create a more universal hanger with also reducing the need for replacing parts on the Derailleur (having this option is also a good idea still though).
@scottyh72
Жыл бұрын
Typically, if you bend the hanger on a modern bike, the derailleur has been bent as well. The idea of the hanger is sound, but the reality is that it rarely saves the derailleur. The frame, now that's another story, and it will be interesting to see how that unfolds.

If your buying a $1,600 "transmission" I don't think you're gonna care about the cost of replacement parts. And if you do, don't buy AXS. To your point though, the bigger concern is the durability of the frame. I assume SRAM already did it, but I need to see long term testing on the actual frame, cause I don't understand how carbon wouldn't absorb a lot of the impact.
@greyseiker6139

@@topspot4834 Frame will indeed absorb the impact, the hanger is a buffer between frame and delarieur. If i want durability, ignoring the weight( because less materials usually means less durability, just noting) Il stick with Shimano linkglide. Still a good job from SRAM.

@Nicoya
Жыл бұрын
I think the UDH, which the transmission mount is based on, essentially mounts to your thru-axle (like it's still retained in the frame but gets more of its strength from the axle being screwed into it) so you'd have to crash hard enough to bend your thru-axle to actually sustain frame damage and at that point I'd imagine you'd just be happy to survive whatever hellish incident your bike just went through.

I'm no engineer, but I'm not worried about the frame getting damaged having the axle/hub take the hit. If your frame does get damaged, as in broken stays, it probably would have gotten damaged anyways with a normal hanger. I'm more worried about the derailleur itself not withstanding the hit and having to replace that part more often than you should. It's great and all, cool tech that shifts better under load, less of a risk of breaking on the trail, but it's TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS for a group set?

Amazing, SRAM. I only was going to mention that your animation video on the Eagle Transmission homepage showing the GX derailleur has a ridonculously low 24 fps. Wwhich looks a little embarrassing because it's so choppy. This can only be an oversight, right? Please, fix
