I was in Sri Lanka in February and visited the memorial for the victims of the tsunami and saw some of the buildings that had just been left deserted. Being there made me feel sad now watching this has brought back all the sadness I felt when I was there. Our tour guide told us hundreds of people rushed out to catch the fish that had been stranded when the water went out and no one knew why until it was loo late

@@navodyarathnayaka7408 I realise that which made it really sad that it happened. I found the people of Sri Lanka some of the most wonderful people I’ve met in my travels. The whole country has so much beauty which I only saw some of while there. I will definitely be going back as soon as I can so I can see more.

there were 2 waves, the first revealed parts of the sea floor that were not there before. some people took some fish, some were trying to put them back in the water, and others were simply exploring.
Most people world wide knew the word tsunami, they just didn't know what it exactly looked like. I believe movies is what made most people not recognize this as a real threat, as in movies (which most people watch and love) tsunamis are 100 meters high and come in with/in One swipe. These waves looked normal from a distance, and that was expected. You are right that its likely most if not all had no idea of precautions, because had they all acted as if a tsunami was coming, they would have expected a 100 meter wall of water coming. Most either had no idea what a tsunami looked like or were misinformed about it.

Unfortunately too few people know that when the water recedes this far back you run for your life

Tsunamis are just raises in the sea level for a short time, but people think they are massive tidal waves. The only other large displacement of water that could raise the sea level so quickly are probably storm surges from hurricanes and wind.

When you see that people were seeking shelter on the Benton’s railway platform you realise the severity of the water coming so far inland from the ocean , Sadly so many died because they had no proper warning available 😢😢😢
