🌺Welcome to the album “Sri Purandara Sahitya Darpana in Muraliganam.” The reflections of Dr. M Balamuralikrishna’s on Purandaradāsa's compositions in Kannada, Telugu & Tamil.
🌺 Introduction to the Album:
The new moon day of the lunar calendar in the month of Pushya, that is bhahula amāvāsyā to be specific, is the day to remember and honour Sri. Purandaradāsa for his significant and legendary contribution to Carnatic music. This particular day, we observe as his Puñya-dina or Ārādhana.
Remembering Karnataka Sangeetha Pithāmaha with reverence on his Ārādhana, we offer our salutations through a special album “Sri Purandara Sahitya Darpana in Muraliganam.”
In this album of reflections on the compositions of Purandaradāsa, we present you some renditions by Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK). Each set of rendition has its original composition in Kannada, followed by a translation of the same in Tamil or in Telugu.
BMK’s contribution to popularise Purandaradāsa’s compositions is not only limited to his all-time great film hits in Kannada over several decades, but also as a poet he has translated them and sang them for the non-Kannada audience worldwide.
🌺 About Translation:
I once read that a good translation of any literary work is characterised by the passion, skill, curiosity, rich vocabulary, and honesty of the translator. Further, when these characteristics are complemented by the ability of the translator to grasp the intent of the original composer, that is going beyond. If the same is understood through a mind of a similar frequency and texture, that is going farther. Then the outcome would not only delight those who can follow the translation, but would also enlighten those who could follow the original work as well as the translated. By listening to the renditions of both the original and the paraphrased version in a different language, the ardent listener in you would discover that Dr. Balamuralikrishna distinctly stands-out as a significant ambassador of Purandara Sahitya, mirroring it through his Muraliganam for the world audience. In short, the reach of Purandara Sahitya is extended.
🌺 About Music:
Dr. Balamuralikrishna has written music for many compositions of various masters of yore. He brought to bear his stature as a renowned vāggéyakāra and a remarkable tunesmith through his ability and mastery to mirror the mood of the composer. This he did by singing with perfect diction and a measured intonation that led the listeners to experience what the original composer contemplated when the composition was created.
Dr. Balamuralikrishna chose to combine melody with music that reflected the times and the mood of the composer. His interpretation of Purandaradāsa remained original and he did not fall to the temptation of foisting the compositions with contemporary trends with an eye on just melody to sound catchy.
Dr. Balamuralikrishna’s translation of Purandaradāsa compositions and regularly rendering them in his concerts have helped the world audience to appreciate the content, the lyrical beauty, the social context, and the contemporary relevance of Purandaradāsa’s compositions.
