The Normandie is the only other liner built over the past 90 years that deserved to be preserved. By contrast, the 1960's-era QE2, now moored off Dubai, reflects the look of the era of Woodstock, disco & polyester. If the Normandie hadn't been lost in the 1940s, it would be ideal for today's luxury-themed Dubai, UAE. Even the much newer QM2, built in the early 2000s, has interiors that show off the more pampered (or Silicon-Valley-gilded) millennial years. But its history will be different from that of the Normandie, Queen Mary & QE1. As for the SS United States, built in the 1950s, it's from the age of "I Love Lucy," the Studebaker & Cadillacs with fins. But its interiors were gutted, so it doesn't even have a "Happy Days" theme it could easily tap into.

There is no words to describe how beautiful this ship was, she's a true masterpiece. It is simply mindblowing that Normandie is from the 1930's; and I personally think that it's not even fair to compare today's cruise ships with her, they look like cheap hotels next to her

For sure. Normandie was the greatest liner ever built. Many of the large cruise ships today are just modern day amusement parks.

The most beautiful ocean liner ever constructed, lost far too soon.

The smooth modern interiors, the bright open airy spaces. Gilded beautiful touches of decoration. Its all just.... Just. Too much. Beautiful but overwhelming. Beautiful ship inside and out. But the humbler and more modest wood panels and cool carpets of the Queen Mary always appealed more to me. Nice video though!

Thanks for your comment, I also agree that the Queen Mary is very cozy looking with all the wood paneling.

There is no doubt the SS Normandie was an impressive ship, but she looks more like a monument than an express liner. It's just too, too much. It would be hard to relax in any of her public rooms. The Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were much more comfortable; and passengers didn't feel like they needed to put on airs while enjoying a cup of tea or a hot toddy after lunch.

I strongly agree, the darker interiors gave these Queens a very cozy look. Very sad that the Queen Elizabeth and that the Normandie were lost.

The Queens would have appealed to more people, I agree. But Normandie was still the greatest. We've stayed at the Plaza Athenee and the Meurice, which are Paris palace hotels, 4 times now. No one stays in those hotels to be casual or because they want to be comfortable. Normandie is a Paris palace hotel at sea.
