Lost at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in DC! After former Italian Prime Minister and Fascist Dictator Benito Mussolini’s execution by Italian partisans in 1945, rumors began circulating in the medical community that the late Mussolini had suffered from some neuropsychiatric condition. Mussolini's disease, the theory went, might help explain his authoritarianism, paranoia, and otherwise erratic behavior during his rule of Fascist Italy, and entry into World War II. American psychiatrist Dr. Winfred Overholser, superintendent of St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Southeast Washington, DC, wanted to investigate. So following the death of Mussolini, he had samples of Mussolini's brain sent to Washington, D.C., so that he and scientists from the U.S. military could examine them. In 1966, when Mussolini's widow wanted the remains of her husband returned to Italy, the military hospital complied. But the brain sample at St. Elizabeth's Hospital had disappeared and to this day, the whereabouts of Mussolini's brain remain a mystery.
