THIS EPISODE:
(1) This cemetery marks the spot of what used to be a 17th century French Signal Fort and was one of the stops for Father Jacques Marquette. Father Marquette, along with famed French cartographer and explorer Louis Joliet, together were the first white men to set foot on these lands in the late 1600's. Shortly thereafter, they made their way from this bluff in continuation of their journey in search of the Mississippi River.
Father Marquette was a French-American Jesuit missionary who founded Michigan's first European settlement, Sault Ste. Marie, and later founded St. Ignace, Michigan. In 1673, Marquette, with Louis Jolliet, an explorer born near Quebec City, was the first European to explore and map the northern portion of the Mississippi River Valley.

Louis Joliet was a French-Canadian explorer known for his discoveries in North America. Jolliet and Jesuit Father Marquette, a Catholic priest and missionary, were the first non-Natives to explore and map the Mississippi River.
Ironically, Joliet received almost all of the credit and was awarded an island by the king of France.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
