After Peter and Andrew , on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, John and his brother James join Jesus who will later call them “ the Boanerges", that is the sons of the thunder..
John is the youngest disciple, the beloved by Jesus. He is the one assisting at the Transfiguration of Jesus, leaning upon his breast at the Last Supper, staying beneath the Cross with Mary and taking her with him, the one who sees and trusts at the Sepulchre, who recognizes the risen Jesus at the Sea of Galilee and will stay alive until He comes again.
John is in close relationship with Jesus and the Virgin Mary. . Jesus loves him, so on the symbolical level John is the ideal disciple who represents all of us.
St. Irenaeus knows St. Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, one of John’s disciples, who witnessed that John wrote his Gospel in Ephesus and the Book of Revelation during his exile in Patmos.
Tertullian reports John’s martyrdom at the Latin Gate next to the Appia way in Rome.
Eusebius affirms John is living to a very old age. According to the Orthodoxs he is more than 100 years on the day his disciples experience his body ascend to heaven.
John is a pillar of the primitive Church also being the longest living witness of Jesus.
He is considered by the Canon of the Catholic Church the author of the fourth Gospel, of three New Testament Epistles, of the Book of Revelation.
In his missionary travels, John grows new communities he will remain in strong relationship with.
John knows well the Old Testament and the Jewish culture but at the same time he understands the Hellenistic mentality. He shows his special gifts in communicating to different cultural and social groups.
In the western iconography, John is represented as a young beardless type while in the Byzantine one he is usually old, with long white beard and hair.
An eagle is John’s enblem as an Evangelist.
He is the “son of thunder”, a strong character, resolute in thinking and acting , probably quite handsome.
The Byzantine church entitles him the Theologian.
The original Hebrew name means " God gave grace".
John the Apostle is the patron saint of love, loyalty, friendships, and authors.
