In Venice, all streets and canals lead to St. Mark's Square, both literally and figuratively. This is THE place to go when in Venice. As soon as I arrived, I felt the square calling me and that was my first destination. So why go to St. Mark's Square? Because this is the centerpiece of the city and because of the architecture and centuries old history that has occurred here. St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) is a beautiful ornate basilica on the outside with stunning gold mosaics on the inside. St. Mark's Bell Tower (Campanile di San Marco) is a bell tower that rises 323 feet high and gives you amazing views of Venice. The Torre del'Orologio is the clock tower with a 500 year old clock and two bronze statues which ring the bell hourly. Around the square itself are museums, an exhibition center, cafes and restaurants. Around the corner is Doge's Palace which is a must to visit. Of course, you can do some people watching when you're not trying to picture what Venice was like centuries ago.
