I hiked to St. Mary's Glacier, one of the classic Colorado day hikes. The trailhead is located just outside of Idaho Springs in the Arapaho National Forest, and it's a beauty that takes you some amazing views. I hiked in winter, which is a brilliant walk and scramble on packed ice.
It's just about a mile to St. Mary's Lake and just another half-mile beyond the lake to scale the hill onto the ice field.
The trailhead starts around 10,400 feet, and the ice field (glacier) is around 11,000 feet.
You can ski here, snowshoe or go sledding in the winter when conditions are right.
The hike has a totally different look in spring, summer and fall before the snow covers the trail and hillside.
