*I will probably never in my life see anything quite as eerie as this video.* I attended St. Paul's from 1969 to 1971 (grades 8 & 9). During the week, it was probably like any boarding school, meals in the dining hall, assembly in the chapel, etc etc. But being the only full-time, 7-day-a-week boarder at St. Paul's, the weekends were another world entirely. I had the whole building to myself and was free to explore where and how I wanted. This video may seem like viewing the Titanic at the bottom of the sea for you, but let me tell you: I roamed those halls and nooks and crannies when they were ALIVE, and got to know that building like the back of my hand. Lots of exploration, lots of mischief, lots of memories. Much in the video actually postdates me, the MJ poster for example. But just about everything I recognize viscerally, except for the clock tower, which I never dared to climb. I knew my way into the kitchen, which I visited often on Saturday nights looking for snacks. And I knew where all the teachers lived, the ones with families in the detached housing to the northeast, but the singles and couples in apartments on the upper floors of the main building. The opening drone sequence shows the rooftop where Mr. Jones set up an apparatus to watch the solar eclipse of March 1970, and later in the video are shots of the east basement, where the kitchen staff were housed. The last staircase rising precipitously to the central gable led to the apartment of Otto R. Dietrich, the official disciplinarian in charge of passing out demerits (signed at the bottom with an ominous "ORD"). The chapel is remarkably still in pretty good shape. I noticed that the Juliet balconies have been drywalled over, but the stained glass all looks intact. The lectern is apparently maintained by someone (note the open Bible and the eyeglasses), while just about nothing else is. I see no trace of the study hall, which was on the ground floor corner nearest the field house, decorated with the memorial walls of past "Best Boys" of the school. I also do not see the trash chute on the east wing, where I once accidentally disposed of a charred letter that minutes later started a fire in the basement. Fire department came, no harm done. And also missing is the huge bust of the founder that was in a glass display at the entrance. And as regards the New York Nets using our field house and locker rooms? They did indeed. I remember walking into the community showers after gym class one day, only to find a forest of naked giants in there showering after their practices. Talk about a one-of-a-kind memory. Rick Barry was one of the Nets during those days, but I cannot say for sure if he was one of those in the showers. I do however remember the players being more self-conscious than us students! Lastly, though a half century late, this video prompts me to send a shout-out to the greatest of the educators I had at St. Paul's: Moore, Natas, McGill, Petzinger, Casey, Fletcher. But most of all, to the late Mr. Jim Jones (the eclipse watcher, not the cult leader). Mr. Jones looked out for me in my St. Paul's years and he went out of his way to make sure I got safely to doctor appointments, airports, train stations, and the like. Looking back, he was one the best friends I ever had and his kindness and generosity has helped guide me ever since. A lesson for us all: the people that matter in your life? Don't take them for granted. Thanks to Urbex and Chill for the video tour. It has been quite the mind walk.

I grew up at St. Paul's. My Dad was a teacher from 1955-1970 or 1971. He taught Latin, Ancient Greek, German and French. We had lived in the main building below the clock tower and also in one of the houses in back. In the chapel, the stained glass windows were supposedly made by Tiffany & Company. One of the murals showing a student with two older gentleman. The older gentleman were Kenneth Dolebare and Nick Ferringa, both headmasters of the school at different time. Mr. Dolebare had two great danes that use to roam the halls when school was out. The dining room was a sit down affair each night. Each teacher had a table with their family and some of the students. During the Blackout of 1969 everyone was in the dining room for safety since there was no electricity. We sang 99 Bottles of Beer on the wall to its bitter end. The large field house or modern gym in its day was the summer training camp of the old ABA N.Y. Nets when Dr. J. and Rick Barry played for the team. Its a shame somehting more hasn't been done especially with the history the place holds. Lots of memories.

Are you a McGill by chance? If so, I do remember you. I don't believe you were a student at St. Paul's, right? But I remember talking a lot with the son of my Latin teacher at dinner. If that was you, just to say: I took Latin from your dad during the two years I attended St. Paul's. It was one of my favorite classes ever, and the fact that I won the Latin prize both years shows that your dad was a phenomenal teacher.

I attended from 1959 to 1963. Nick Ferringa was a Dutchman who was the headmaster at the time. A most lovely gentleman. I was a boarding student and since I was a foreign student I often spent the vacations, except summer, at the school. Perhaps I knew you. I regret transferring to a boarding school in Coconut Grove, Miami, Fla.

Moved to GC in 1969 from Maspeth, Queens....and I can still remember the first time I saw st.pauls....i was mesmerized by the giant very English looking building...and it was an all boys school .. my sister and I would ride our bikes to st.pauls and go under the covered entrance and ride around and through as much as we could...I was fascinated by the Architecture. I moved away in 1978 to L.A. and it's just so unbelievable to me that the roof and or roofs were not repaired at all..... Common sense will tell you....a roof that doesn't leak will help preserve the interior more than not. . The craftsmanship of this era, the details...woodwork Oh I can truly say I always wished that I would see a spirit.... apparition.,..something... I would hate to see st Paul's be demolished like the GC Hotel.. . I watched that being demolished from JR.High English class

This was such a beautiful school. I pass by it every Tuesday and always hope that some contractor would be there to restore it. I know the athletic fields are still being used as I have attended a couple of kids' soccer games in the past couple of years. My neighbor was a student there in the 60's. We lived about a half an hour away but he was sent there because his parents felt he needed the discipline of the school's routine.

This is a beautiful building! I went to that school in 67. lived there. lots of creepy stories. I checked out the rumor about the tunnel leading to the girls school and meeting under the cathedral, its true. ii was in the sub cellar and found the crumbling entrance. supposedly a common furnace under the cathedral would heat the 3 buildings. story was a boy burned trying to make it to the girls school. dont know about that, but it was a Viking school, to teach boys to be manly Christian men. you missed the pool. its got a floor that rolls out over it like in a fred astair movie. very creepy. you are lucky you got in there. there is a study hall area thats a good room too. your coments during filming indicate you dont know anything about the history of that school. the headmaster's family lived on the top floor, as well as the teachers having their quarters up there. bring somebody in there that knows the layout. why would you think somebody would lock a student in a room? ever think of store rooms?
@richardmutt

The locks are on the outside of the dorm rooms are there for the same reason you have locks on the outside of your locker - when you aren't there, no one can steal your things. School policy was that you didn't lock your door when you were inside it.

I'd love to visit some abandoned properties. Seems like it would be a blast to visit a place like this. More information on the school can be found at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Paul%27s_School_(Garden_City,_New_York). It sounds like the building could have been converted to senior housing in the past, which would have likely kept the building in good shape, but the residents decided against it. Too bad as it's now deteriorating.

@richardmutt

He meant to say 1989 - that's when St. Mary's closed and the Cathedral combined the girl's school and the boys school. Maybe you mean that in 1969 they started to let the girls from St. Mary's come over for certain classes? I took French at St. Mary's and there were always girls from St. Mary's at St. Paul's taking classes. There was a van that drove over from each school every period

I also taught art classes to the young locals. We lived in the dorms there as well, showered in those bathrooms, ate in the dining room. An absolute shame and disgrace on those who can't sort this out, a wealthy middle class town. I have no doubt it will be demolished and replaced with yet another soul less mall or some other generic carbuncle that makes a lot of middle America look the same to outsiders. So sad to see.
