I vow to thee, my country All earthly things above Entire and whole and perfect The service of my love The love that asks no questions The love that stands the test That lays upon the altar The dearest and the best The love that never falters The love that pays the price The love that makes undaunted The final sacrifice And there's another country I've heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her Most great to them that know We may (we may not count her armies) We may (we may not see her King) Her fortress is a faithful heart Her pride is suffering And soul by soul and silently Her shining bounds increase And her ways are ways of gentleness And all her paths are peace

A nice story about the Queen Mother was when she was in Canada on a tour in 1939. Two veterans, of Scottish heritage, were in a debate about her nationality. One said she was English by marriage, the other said Scottish by birth. When they asked her, she replied: "I'm Canadian!"

When I watched Diana's wedding in 1981, it was NBC's coverage that I was watching. When I watched her funeral in 1997, I had A&E's broadcast with the BBC's coverage narrated by Tom Fleming and David Dimbleby.

It was nice to see a shot of the late Queen Mother singing the hymn at 2:19. She more than perhaps anyone in the Royal Family embodied the meaning of this hymn--that of steadfast service to one's country and to God. And now her daughter The Queen is following in her mother's footsteps.

It does not surprise me that Princess Diana chose this beautiful song for her wedding day. It certainly embodies her love of England and was evidenced by how she poured out her heart and life to it. that's from a Texan.

I chose it for my own wedding as well, partly due to royal wedding inclusion (ie Charles & Diana’s wedding) but mainly as a nod to the military which plays a part in mine and my spouse’s family histories (it’s frequently sung on Armistice Day and when on parade in the military)

@organisten I am not British, I'm American, my parents were Italian. The reason why a hymn such as this makes one feel proud is that it recalls to mind the special things unique to one's nation that makes one proud of it. In this case it may be the determined resolve with which the British people confronted the Nazi scourge, alone at first. Granted no nation is perfect but a hymn is an appeal to the sou to call up "the better angels of our of our nation".

It is without doubt that God truly blessed our British Isles. The "shining bounds" of this hymn are not only a taste of paradise but symbolic of the glory of the British Empire. Moreover, our cathedrals, St. Paul's, stand as a monument to how we, the British people, once strove with God himself in the frontier of expansion, industrialisation and in the face of all adversity.

Not sure why it would make you "proud to be British" - Britain is mentioned nowhere in the lyrics! At heart, this isn't a patriotic song - it's a Christian hymn about longing for that "other country", the Kingdom whose "ways are ways of faithfulness, and all her paths are peace."
