POLTAVA: SECRETS OF AN OLD SHIP
The new episode of the “St. Petersburg’s Storeys. City is Growing Up” project will take you on an amazing tour of a legendary ship recreated with support from Gazprom. The Poltava is an authentic replica of a ship-of-the-line from the era of Peter the Great, and it features a unique exhibition.
Poltava’s captain, Maxim Korshunov, will walk you through the ship, including its innermost corners. You’ll learn who used to join the sailors onboard and what a “powder monkey” is, and dive into the history of the ship and the era of Peter I.
Why did they take children onboard the naval ship? How heavy is the ship’s wheel mechanism? How do you feed 350 sailors on a cruise? Who’s the konstaapel? What does “careening” mean? And a lot more.
You’ll learn all this while walking around the Poltava, which was designed by Peter I himself.
Enjoy!
