Stabat Mater" is the title of a 13th-century Latin hymn that was attributed to Pope Boniface IX in 1727 and later adopted by the Roman Catholic Church as one of its religious chants. The hymn depicts the sorrowful feelings of Mother Mary as she stands beneath the cross, witnessing her son, Jesus Christ, being crucified.
"Stabat Mater" is often arranged in musical compositions and composed as classical pieces. Renowned composers such as Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Franz Joseph Haydn, Gioachino Rossini, Antonín Dvořák, and Francis Poulenc have created well-known compositions titled "Stabat Mater." These works typically portray the nuances of sorrow, sacrifice, and the spiritual magnificence encapsulated in the hymn's lyrics.
