I was in the Longhorn Band that year and at that game...one of my favorite football memories - Stafford to Jones...then deafening silence (from them, not from the band)!

Scott Bishop What season was this? I seem to remember them winning in the last few seconds against OU a week or two earlier.

I do remember this so well. I can remember when Jones scored the TD I was yelling and screaming all over the house and My dad was jumping up and down saying." Please no flags". Wonderful memory my dad and I shared.

Great catch! The pass went where it needed too and Mr. Jones held on to it spite of good defensive play. Hook 'em!

That's because it was edited. Right after the announcer say, "And this is it. Win or lose rides on this play", left guard Paul Jetton was flagged for a 'false start' and Texas was moved back 5-yards. They lined up in a different formation after the penalty with Jones lined up on the left on the game-winning play..

I remember this like it was yesterday. We were at the 13, but had a penalty that pushed us back to the 18 and then...well, you saw it. Tony Jones became a "go-to" guy after that play....

Great post; no one seems to ever talk about this game - - maybe because it was in the dark days of the late 80's - - but it was a good one. Britt Hager played like a man possessed that day on D; Hogs had no answer for him as I recall.

@Statalyzer I agree. I don't know if they would have made them run the play if the defense could score then but I am sure as what you have pointed out that it is exactly what they would have done. It would have just been a waste of time.

You could return an extra point for a two point conversion back then. I returned one my freshman year in college which was 1986. The clock had expired and unless the extra point was needed to decide the game they didn't have to kick it. they still don't.

It was 1987. The extra point or points weren't even tried. Back then only the scoring team could score on the extra point.

@PhillipCreeper All they would have had to do is kneel anyway, even if there was defensive scoring possible.

Guard moved "on purpose" prior to snap. Tony was small , but he was really slow.

Respectfully disagree. No, it didn't have a tight spiral, but it was threaded in there on the money, and perfectly timed. No lack of zip either! A lot of hard work and repetition in practice was behind that epic play!

Too bad the next week they blew the game next week against a mediocre University of Houston team the next week 60-40! Brett Stafford set an SWC record for 4 touchdown passes - to the University of Houston! 4 pick sixes! I know because I WAS THERE at the Astrodome to witness the meltdown! That is why I ALWAYS have guarded optimism why I hear "Texas is back!" Just like 2018!

88 and 89 were also disastrous under McWilliams, yet 90 with Gardere and the Cash brothers Texas went on their ‘Shock the Nation ‘ Tour eventually going 10-2 if I recall with a embarrassing loss against Miami...🤘🤘🤘
