JD looks so much like my boi (in the thumbnail) that I had a hard time seeing him in that condition. I know people think of staffies and AmStaffs as ‘dangerous dogs’ but it seems to me that (at least in the US), they’re the dogs most likely to be abused, ill-socialized, and neglected. I don’t know why. Here in the US I think the stigma means these pit mixes are cheap to acquire, so people sell them (often way too young) for cheap cash to people not knowledgeable or financially stable enough to properly care for a dog. I didn’t care much about the breed of dog I had before I got my AmStaff. I was determined to adopt a dg out of the shelter, and since most other breeds are removed by rescue organizations, the shelters are full of this type of dog, so I ended up with one. He’s a perfect gem, and I’ve since met many other wonderful pit mixes - I doubt I’ll ever get any other type of dog.

Government needs to update the penalties for abuse to animals. Generally they get a fine, jail sentences should be a given or a course set up to change the humans behaviour. There should be a national database that accrues names, secondary contacts etc. Harsher penalties and banning ownership period. We need this now.

Yes, public database. I cannot believe some of these abusers are allowed to own dogs again after a year. Nothing will change a person who can be so cruel to innocent animals. My heart gets sick seeing innocents put in harms way and intentionally by the owner. Don't get an animal unless you are willing to sacrifice for him or her. I've seen homeless people in city streets treat their pets better than some of these people. Ugh.

I think it helps if the love is reciprocal. The problem is that dogs are resource hoarders and their human is a resource to them so mutual trust between animal and human is imperative. And should come well before love. That trust should be build on and constantly reinforced. Dogs are not independent creatures and sometimes with a certain kind of person, the dog can trust and love that person even if the person reciprocate with ill treatment. It's very sad, but it's very like Stockholm syndrome where the abused adores the abuser.
@jimsavage147

I think the answer is ignorance and fear. Even with cruelty, the act very seldom has anything actually to do with the dog, but is more about the person. Any dog can be made vicious as well, and they don't get therapy, they get put down.

Many dogs come all the way to their owners and try to sleep with their bodies attached to their owners. This is not because they want you to do something for them, but because they feel safe around their beloved owners and want to be near their owners. Some dogs will discreetly take a position where they can see their owners from a little distance. Some will even climb on top of their owner's legs or body, or go out of their way to position themselves in an inconvenient place. In particular, sleeping at the feet of their master shows trust and loyalty. When you see your dog sleeping curled up at your feet, you can't help but love him. In some cases, it may be a sign that the dog is trying to protect you.🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶💖💖💖💖💖💖

My pupper will sleep curled up or even spread out across my chest/belly! If he gets too cold he curls up in my heated blanket with me! He has done it since he was a pup! I also have a couple cats who will do the same thing, that is if the pupper gives up some space! I also have pain issues and if I'm in a flare up, they all come and snuggles me. Cats may not leave the house , are not as loud as a dog barking, may not be recognized in poor condition by neighbors. I am in shock! To work as a sniffer dog Ted has to live as a farm animal: outside in a kennel with straw? Because he could be called to work in cold weather in the middle of the night? In what sick mind has this idea sprouted? Dogs who live inside homes with their humans have excellent scent skills, are healthier and happier, even happier to work for their humans/handlers. Gun dogs who live inside homes are pretty eager to run for hours in rough terrain in all kind of weather and stay healthy. It's as if they "park" Ted in an an evironment with very little sensory enrichment and no affection and only allow him interesting activity and affection when he has to work. I don't buy "he has to rest", "he's part of the family" and "he's your best friend": it does not match! This a cruel and outdated view of animals as machines - never thought it would be that of modern UK police. How can these people have 3 dogs as pets in their home and 2 locked in outdoor kennels? All 5 dogs have exactly the same physical and mental needs, the same need for affection. Recipe for a police dog: lock him alone in an outside kennel, get him out to sniff, give him affection when he finds something. Sometimes take him out to play with your pet dogs and lock him back in his outdoor kennel, while your pet dogs get back home with you. What's in these people's minds?

I'm pausing this 7 minutes in to give my 2 cents about why his eyes are red. Strangulation. Our 2 dogs got tangled in their leads while tethered to one of those high run wires. One was fine, the other had been choked so tightly that by the time she was freed, her eyes were red and slightly swollen. When I saw how tightly the Staffy's chain was on here, I immediately thought of that day when one dogs over enthusiasm nearly killed the other. How someone could leave that poor baby like that, knowing how uncomfortable and unnatural it is ... I'll never understand. We couldn't get that collar off of our dog fast enough! And they were never tethered like that again. .

My husband had an EOD dog before he retired. He had started training with a thoroughbred shepherd who failed training. A friend went to the pound and found KC…a mutt…who was brilliant. Although he was teased about her by the other officers she outperformed or equally performed with the best and brightest and very expensive dogs. I used to help with her training…hubby would hide explosives in a room and would take her through the search. She was so fast! One of the important traits in such a dog is okay drive. KC would do anything for a game of fetch as a reward. She lived to a ripe old age thoroughly spoiled by myself when she retired.
