I love this. So much better to watch someone learning through error and showing me instead of just repeating all the same facts as the next channel pretending like problems don't happen while I struggle.

Yea…I’ve seen two ways to handle this. 1) bid such an outrageous amount that it’s either worth it or they cancel 2) just fire the client and say, I’m not the right choice for this as it’s more trouble than I could charge you for.

You can use shellac reduced 50% with denatured alcohol as a pre-stain regardless of the stain you use. With pine, you may choose to do 2 thin coats as a pre-stain. Dries really quick. Most important part is sanding the wood RIGHT BEFORE pre-staining, staining and top coats. You’ll be surprised the difference in finish and adhesion, if you wait just a few hours let alone overnight!. Pine is notorious for color aging so mot sure how long it will stay matched. Gel stains are not my favorite for longevity. End of your video…..do an extra coat of shellac pre-stain to prevent more stain absorption for end grain

Thanks for the tip! I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t experimented with shellac yet. I think I may need to amend that soon.

Hello... From Malaysia.... Can I use beeswax for a tabletop cutting board I'm making? Will it provide some degree of waterproofing? I was thinking to soak the wood in mineral oil, then after a few days and coats, cover in several thin coats of beeswax. Any thoughts? This paste is terribly expensive here in Malaysia. Could I use beeswax instead?
@NorthwestCraftsman

Great question Mohammad! I actually use a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil on my cutting boards. And no need to soak for days, just a heavy first coating and let it sit in air overnight. No technical need for beeswax at that point but if you apply a light layer of the mineral oil and beeswax mixture, that would provide some extended protection.

@NorthwestCraftsman I'm not in a rush. I was thinking (and boy am i a novice!) : mineral oil until saturated, then beeswax, the same. Be it 2 days, or 2 weeks. Then - I assume from my reading - follow up beeswax every 6 months or so. Any comments are GREATLY appreciated.

Not a problem at all! I’m still a novice at many areas of woodworking. I’ve been doing boards for a few years now though and have somewhat of a process. I initially had the same thought, “Keep adding oil until the board won’t take it anymore” this turned out to be a mistake because in different environmental conditions, the wood began expelling the oil leading to a mess. This caused me to go back and look at the purpose behind the mineral oil. It is only to seal the wood, which means it doesn’t need to be fully saturated, only the outer layers. That is why I changed my process to only do a single heavy coat and then let it sit for 24 hours while the rest of the oil soaked in.

You mentioned the main issue near the end of the video.... you were using the wrong species of wood. I don't feel like you were having trouble with your staining process. It seems like you were expecting the two different types of wood to look the same by simply matching the color. I'd say you were spot on with your craftsmanship and choice of color, but you overlooked the importance of finding the correct species of wood.

That is something I have grown to appreciate more over the past couple years. Especially with customers, trying to steer them to the right species can be a challenge.

Well, beings I’m from the Northwest and seem to do what your channel is about you now have a new subscriber. I came here because I’m working on a buffet from heck! I started over a year ago and had so many problems I threw it to the side. Now I’m bound and determined to finish it. So I decided to gel stain the drawers because there was a big ink stain and also the rest of the buffet had dark wood and the drawers were light - maybe pine? I’m horrible determining woods. Anyway I totally forgot about pre wood stain. I have it. What I’m dealing with is the stain didn’t go into the grain of the wood very well. I was trying to see if I need to remove the stain, pre stain and do again. I decided I am going to take a brush and really go into the grain. I used an old t-shirt for the stain. Well I guess I will see what happens!

Good luck! Once you’ve stained a wood, sometimes you can sand past it but there will usually be a remnant. That being said, if you’re staining the same color, that’d remove the bulk, then a pre stain would help to even out the absorption before gel staining for even more consistency. If it is pine (not unlikely) it is notoriously difficult to stain because of what you described. It takes stains very unevenly. You’re in the right track though! Let me know how it goes!
