Nice job my name is David Hartshorn i am a finish chemist i have restored thousands of pieces of furniture and have studied the subject for over thirty years i give free advice when doing a glaze coat oil base would be a better choice better flow out and more time to manipulate the glaze coat to prep use tsp and maroon scotch Brite this step cleans and gives tooth to your project one more thing when using water base its not advisable to use a tack cloth it can cause bonding issues if you have questions i can help keep up the good work

Do you have a channel. I am going to apply the oil based gf gel stain over oak cabinets because they are finished with some type of wax based topcoat and the water based was separating in tiny circles on the surface. So oil it is. My question is that I have some finish wear near the sink: what, if anything should I put on the worn places so that there is not a difference in uptake by the wood so the drawer front will look even when the gel stain is applied. Many thanks.

I've never had to deal with smoker pieces. I know you can shellac them to seal the odor but I'm not sure how the stain would apply over that. I'd google how to get smoke smell out of furniture.

So happy to see this. We stripped and completely sanded all the stain out of an old oak dining rm table, stained it with Water based General and top coated it. It turned out great. But now we are doing our daughters oak table top and painting the bottom like ours. We will sand the table top but not remove the stain now that we saw this video. We are using the same stain you did. Fingers crossed. Thank you.

I watch your video and did it like you did, but one thing you forgot to mention is that the gel stain you have to go by parts, and remove the excess gel. I had to sand it down completely the table that I had stain, and looking at other videos, they all said the same thing that you need to wipe down the stain as you go , to make it a nice finish... I just applied the gel like you said, and it was a mess

This is exactly what Ive been looking for! I have a mid century Asian style coffee table. I love the color but it has a very glossy finish. If I roughed up the top coat could I just go back with some type of beeswax instead of a top coat? It gets very little use. Would I need to restain if I like the finish. I believe its a dark walnut. I like a more nautural appearance to the wood. Thank you!

I enjoyed watching this video. I have never done any restoration myself, but got inspired to restore a tall kids cabinet with shelves. Its beautiful surface is painted pink and has lots of details resembling a French house with windows and flowers on windowsills. I wish I could attach a picture to the comment, but don't know how. Anyhow, I'd like to keep its surface, and touch up the sides and base with a fresh paint. Would you recommend using the techniques described in the video and just apply 3 coats of a top coat to preserve this cabinet?

Wow, that's magic, and so inspiring! Do you think this would work well on those nasty builder grade oak kitchen cabinets (like in my kitchen!) I have been looking for a good way to knock down the oranginess without losing the grain, while protecting the finish going forward (already about 20 years old). This and the original table video really make me hopeful. Would love to hear what you think. In the meantime, I'm diving in to your other videos...

Hello, I'm working on a dresser and using this process. I had a difficult time with the stain "beading up". I just had to keep going over it for awhile to not do so. We let it dry over night. 12 hours later and it's still pretty tacky. We did the vinegar solution and light sanding, but seems to not be adhering fully. When I've stained items before I use a rag and wipe it away, but your method didn't call for that. Should I have? Everything I'm reading about ways to fix it is to put on another coat, let it soften the first coat and then wipe away the excess stain. And then it should dry fully. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks
@kaylab1157

I honestly dont think that this process works well. The stain works by soaking into the wood grain and if you dont strip the varnish off, there is nothing for the stain to soak into

I have a white bookcase that I was trying to stain with a "Kona" color Rustoleum Polyurethane mix. I'm really new at this so the result was horrible, luckily I only did the back. But now I'm sanding all of it and it's taking me such a long time. Would you recommend being very detailed with the sanding or just a general sand? Those tight corners are the ones that take the longest to sand. I'm really scared to start staining again and seeing it not stick. Thank you for the help!
