One of the BEST groups EVER!!! I saw them at the Apollo Theater in Harlem as a child and they put on a fantastic show. It was a family affair because their mother and father came out and sang. They later introduced their little brother Cubie. No one could touch their harmonizing as far as I am concerned. This is GOLD!!! RIP Clarence Jr, Cubie, and now James.🥲. What an AMAZING group!!! I was listening to all of their classic songs today. I love them!

The 5 Stairsteps were the premier young sibbling group of the 1960s. They were produced by Curtis Mayfield. Many of the songs Curtis wrote for them, you can hear his influence. The Stairsteps were underrated and actually they influenced the Jackson 5. There was a comment below that they didn't make it because they didn't go to Motown and they sang too many ballads. Those ballads are timeless. I rallied for an "Unsung" story on this group. One of my favorite groups of all time.

And that was the problem. Curtis, RIP, was a brilliant artist, but a music impresario, he wasn't. This group was talented but they had poor musical direction. Their material, which was written by the oldest group member and his dad, wasn't commercial enough, and the group's choreography and stage outfits were listless. Moreover, there wasn't any promotional campaign to make the group popular. They should have went to Motown.

@Joe Jones, all of the 5 Stairsteps songs were not ballads If you really know their music, you'd know that not all of their songs were ballads. However their songs that made the Billboard charts were definitely ballads. They didn't have to achieve "mainstream" success, they had success just where they needed success. They didn't go commercial....and thank God. The Jackson Five emulated the 5 Stairsteps. I love the 5 Stairsteps just they way they were.

The reason The Stairsteps didn't make it mainstream-wise was because of lack of publicity and promotion. They never appeared on the cover of Jet, Ebony, or Rolling Stone. Never appeared on Ed Sullivan, American Bandstand, etc. In the 70s they made some changes musically and personally that hurt them. They should have went with Motown, turning down Motown was their biggest mistake. Motown would have helped them cross-over. There probably wouldn't have been a J5, if The Steps went with Motown.

The 5 Stairsteps was under the tutelage of Curtis Mayfield through his Windy-C label which was a subsidiary of Philly's Cameo-Parkway records that had ties to Dick Clark. When Dick Clark was forced to divest (because of a court action) in Cameo-Parkway it soon folded. That in turn caused the closure of Windy-C records and the Stairsteps then went to Buddah records. Incidentally, Curtis Mayfield had initially turned down the Jackson 5 because he had already had a young group, so I'm told.

Why put them in a setting such as that with all those white people who not even appreciating their talent is beyond me 🤷🏽♀️ you can see the jealousy in the white boys behind them lol not one head nod or sway to the music... I’m sure it was uncomfortable to the singers...never the less I was about 6 when this came out, I can remember my big sister playing it over n over lol it still sounds good after all these years.
