We remember WWII as a struggle between good and evil, with Hitler propelling events and the Allied powers saving the day. But Hitler's armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit the spoils of war. That role belonged to Joseph Stalin. This is what our guest Sean McMeekin put forward in this thought-provoking book Stalin's War and it is what he will be talking about with us on WW2TV today.
Hitler's genocidal ambition may have unleashed Armageddon, but Sean will suggest that the conflicts that emerged were the result of Stalin's maneuverings, orchestrated to unleash a war between capitalist powers in Europe and between Japan and the Anglo-American forces in the Pacific.
Sean McMeekin is an American historian, focused on European history of the early 20th century, especially regarding the origins of the First World War, and the role of Russia and the Ottoman Empire. He is currently Francis Flournoy Professor of European History and Culture at Bard College in upstate New York.
